93 3rd Gen idle issue.
 

Hello everyone. I am new to RX7Club and wanted to make my first technical post of my project car. I am having an issue with the idle and smoke as you can see in the video. This is my first RX7 rebuild and I felt that I everything I had done to the engine was very accurate. Putting all the lines and testing all the components was a challenge though. When I first started the engine there was a misfire and smoke but the misfire was resolved by adjusting the TPS but now this issue came about. My other concern is the smoke also. Is it normal to have some smoke when breaking in new apex seals or should I check out the oil meter pump in more detail? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Did you do the rebuild yourself?

It's normal to have some smoke for a little while on a new rebuild. It will need to burn off any lubrication used during the assembly of the engine. How long did you let it run?

What all is on the car? Is everything stock (aside from the intake)?

Mmm, that amount of smoke or more would be expected from assembly lube and anti-seize burning off. But it should subside after 1 or two minutes and be all but gone after 3 or 4. At least that was my experience.
Oil control rings is my first guess.

Everything is stock besides the intake pipe and exhaust along with few misc. pulleys and such. Yes the rebuild was done by me. The engine got the complete rebuild kit put in; apex seals, springs, oil o-ring, soft seals, the works. I re-used the housing and rotors since they seemed to be in good shape. I did have one of the side housing sent out to get machined since the face was not completely flat. Everything was assemble very meticulously since i am a mechanic myself. The only unsure part was that I had bought a used stock turbo which seemed to be in good shape but that might be the cause of the smoke. What I am hoping for is to solve the idle issue first then proceed on to find the smoking. I had adjusted the TPS to where the voltage was 1v closed and 5v open. That had solved the backfiring issue I had but apparently I have more adjustments to make and test. This is my first rotary rebuild so I am hoping that its just something I connected wrong or perhaps a bad valve of some sorts. Thanks again for all the input.

Update on my idle issue. Seems as though I might have an electrical problem. As I was checking out my vacuum routing and few sensors, it got dark out and so I decided to turn on the head lights and wouldn't you know it, the car idled like a charm. Turn off the headlights and it would do the same thing again. Although my car was under a canopy, I did get some water leak into the engine bay. I did have an issue with the headlight retractor motor at one point and turns out the relay had gotten some moisture in it and formed rust. I did replace that relay and everything was fine with the lights up to that point? I guess my question now is how is the headlight circuit tied in with ignition? If anyone have had a similar issue or something close to it, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Check your grounds

one under spark plugs
two on under front bumper cover
one by battery
two under upper intake manifold (coil housing, right in front of it)
Make sure power wire to alternator is attached good

Make sure you have not over filled the oil at all it will smoke bad if you over fill

My car smoked ridiculously and I was considering turbo rebuilds, engine rebuilds. Intake was full of oil car was miss firing when trying to accelerate. I drained oil after warm up refilled with 3 quarts(3.5 total) cleaned out intake cleaned spark plugs cruised around the parking lot for 5 minutes drove down service road(cruising under 2500) come back and 0 smoke and purred like a kitten topped off oil the full line. OVER FILLING WILL MAKE IT SMOKE BAD.
