90 GXL tranny help asap daily driver

This is my only car and I don't know what to do. Nutrual (I can't spell worth ****) is reverse, first is fifth, and 2nd is something. I pulled the shifter and it had metal chunks there. I drained the oil and there were no metal shavings in it so i'm not really sure what to do. Going to drop the tranny so I can start pulling the shifter potion off so I can see what broke. The only junkyard that is open has an 88 and I know that those trannies are different.

The shifter area isn't connected to the rest of the transmission, so if you broke anything, it's probably the shifter bushings. You can see the pieces here: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm. Also, S4 & S5 transmissions are the same, so an '88 NA trans will work just fine.

and again thank you for your help I will goto junkyard and just get the shifter portion out. pissed off that I pulled the whole tranny apart trying to find where the metal shavings came from and it was just the shifter!....all the gears and syncros look good. well I guess that it needed a good cleaning and sealing anyway. again thanks for your help!

Too bad I wasn't on earlier to let you know sooner! Depending on what broke in the shifter area, having the trans out of the car may make the job easier anyway. GL.

I think that it is the shifter itself. On the first ball in the groove there is a something broken in the middle. There maybe something that is missing cause there were a lot of metal chunks in that area.

well the 88 didn't have **** in it but they had an 85. I am going to give that shifter a shot to see it works out. It seems to work well.

same thing happened to me, but 1st and 2nd was bounded up, it wasn't fifth.

I took my tranny apart to the gears in my auto shop, put it back together and it works. (for now.)<- not really trusting my self seeing as how i'm in highschool.
