88 N/A Instrument Cluster Not Working

Today I bought a 1988 N/A GXL knowing that the instrument cluster was messed up. I've done my due research but have found no threads involving a situation where the speedo and odometer work, but not the tach, temperature, oil pressure, or fuel gauge. From what I've read today, the best thing to do is to pull off the instrument cluster and check the soldering as well as a METER fuse. Any feedback would be appreciated. My biggest fear has been that I will do some of the crazy procedures that I've read about when really it could be a simple ground issue or something along those lines.

The speedo is cable driven from the trans..so no electrical connection there.
The rest is 12 volt fed.
So Meter fuse first.

Also, a sketchy ground would result in intermittent operation, not be completely dead. IIRC, power goes through the BTN fuse (under the hood) first, then to the METER fuse under the dash.
