85 GSL-SE, 13B EFI Ignition and/or Timing Help Needed

I have an 85 GSL-SE with RE-EGI. It is a track car, so stripped down (no a/c, p/s etc.). I just rebuilt the engine and am having a bit of a time getting it tuned again.

Ran it last night at the track and it idles fine (oscillates stably between 900 and 1200 rpms). It runs great from idle up to around 5-6k with plenty of bottom end power. But at around 5500 rpms it falls on its face. In other words it runs great from low to mid throttle but there is no difference whatsoever from mid to WOT. I couldn't get it over 6k the whole night.

A fellow RX7 guy at the track took a look and tells me that my timing advance module is bad (the thing that the timing advance vacuum connects to). That seems to make sense to me that that would cause a problem at higher rpms, but I am somewhat of a newbie, learning as I go, and I do not understand the ignition system of this engine enough to figure it out.

Besides that I am not sure even what that part is called, and how to find a replacement.

Can anyone point me in the right direction towards some resources I could use to:
(1) get educated on the ignition system
(2) correct my problem
(3) find parts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have yu checked your timing? If you are losing higher rpm it could be a bit to advance. 5-10 degrees advance from tdc is ok but anything more than that will cause it to fall at about 6000 rpms. Try it and see. Good luck!!

Oscillating between 900 and 1200 RPM is not idling fine. That means there is a vacuum leak, and bad/misadjusted TPS, or both.

GSL-SEs use a vacuum advance system. Testing procedures are in the FSM/Haynes.

You may have a bad ignitor.

Aaron:

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does "TPS" stand for?

Someone did test the vacuum advance system for me and told me that the module was bad, but I am not even sure what that module is called in order to find a replacement.

My ignitors are newer so I don't think that's the issue. If it was would the car run well up to 5K? Surely it would not right? How do I test the ignitors?
