85 gsl over heated

My 85 gsl over heated today while waiting to get into traffic today (it was lunch time so everyone was on that road). Is this because of the stock fan? Once I got it cooled down and got on the road (avoided the main road this time) it ran just fine and my temp went back to where it usually sits, about 1/3 of the temp gauge. Should I get an electric fan for when I'm stopped for long periods?

It sounds like your coolant is low, or your fan clutch is not working. Take a look at those two before you start spending money.

The coolant was just a tad low, I check it before I drive every time since the radiator leaks. My new radiator came in the mail Friday and I'll be swapping out the old one Sunday afternoon. As well as changing all my fluids; oil, coolant, trans, and brake fluid. But as far as I can tell my fan is working. Is it only suppose to spin when your foot is off the clutch?

Swap that rad, and get it topped off on coolant/distilled.

I would suspect the rad and low fluid, If not I would look towards the thermostat. Fan clutch is a possibility and is an easy item to check for proper operation.

Do you have a complete OEM setup for cooling? Fan shroud and all?

Yep everything as far as I can tell is 100% OEM. And I do plan on picking up a new thermostat when I install the radiator. But how do I check for proper fan clutch operation?

If the fan is Clutch type then when the engine is hot, when you shut it down it should not keep spinning..
Also check the play in the fan this way: ENGINE OFF..(lol of course) ..
take the fan blade and turn it,it should rightfully have a little resistance to it..If NOT then the "clutch" is shot in it.
