84 rx7 question
 
I just got an 84 rx7 gsl. Guy said it has 1.1L engine. He said it needs a new fuel pump and has a vacuum leak, which causes the car to bog down and not want to go over 30-35 MPH. I'm new to the 1st gen rx7's, does this problem sound like a fuel pump and vacuum leak or something else?

welcome to the board. :)

first and foremost, you need to get a copy of the Factory Service Manual or an aftermarket version (Haynes, Chilton, etc.)

i would check the fuse and then the pump relay first. you could temporarily jump the circuit and see if the pump works or not. if it works, you should hear it (behind the driver's seat or outside the car just before the rear wheel) and it probably means the relay is bad. if it is dead, then you'll need to replace it before you can go any further with diagnosing the other issues you mentioned.

NOTE: if jumping it does work, please resist the urge to leave it that way and drive around with it.

as for why it won't go over 30-35 MPH, i'd start by changing the fuel filter. it the simplest possible solution because diagnosing carburetor problems can be frustrating and time consuming.

if and/or when the car will start and idle, you can check for vacuum leaks with a can of carburetor cleaner.

Thanks, I will try that. I actauly got a new fuel pump, so I'm gonna put that in and see if it fixes that part of problem. ( I'll check of it the relay as well) The carb has been rebuilt, so that shouldn't be the problem, but you never know. I forgot about the fuel filter so thanks for joggin the memmory on that one. I can't wait to get this thing on the road, it looks so fun to drive.

wait ... the carbie was rebuilt? was that before or after it stopped running right? also, who rebuilt it?

okay, proceed as i outlined before, but keep in mind there may be an unresolved carb issue to complicate things.

2nd that on the carb issue they can be tricky when in doubt clean it out

Duel filter first. Then, if problem persists, perform a flow volume test to see if the pump is working within spec. If all that checks out, then look into ignition issues, then carb internals (cleaning/rebuild).

I would also put a can of Seafoam in the gas tank to clean up any carbon deposits in the engine (good stuff, but put it only in the gas tank).

Guy said the problem occured after carb was rebuilt. I thought he said it was sent off to be rebuilt, but I can check with the guy. I'll try cleaning it as well though.

unfortunately, having the rebuild before the problems occurred could mean that the carburetor is the problem. i'm not as well-versed in Nikki diagnostics as others, so i'll defer to more Nikki-savvy members on that.

i'd say whenever you're able to establish adequate fuel flow to the carbie, if the car is still acting up, then you should start looking to troubleshoot for possible issues with the rebuild (floats, accelerator pump, etc.) sorry i can't help any more than this.

if it still has the stock exhaust system the cat could be clogged up. or maybe the float level is set too low and it's just running out of fuel.

Looks like I got a lot of things to start looking for. I hope its just something simple, I hate not being able to drive this thing yet......................
