'83 RX7S - Carb Flooding at idle
 

Hey all,

Just picked up an 83 with an idle issue. Engine has been rebuilt, not a whole lot of miles on it. It'll drive fine, but at idle the primaries are dumping fuel and it'll stall/idle rough. I have new floats coming, but the float levels seemed about where they should be. Only thing I can think of is maybe something in the idle circuit is stuck open; I don't know how long this carb was sitting before the PO installed the new engine. The PO also did a rats nest delete, but I've checked for vacuum leaks and I can't find any.

Any possible things I'm missing? I have half a mind to just throw another nikki at this thing.

If you didn't personally adjust the float levels to factory specs, don't assume they're right. There are two adjustments that need to be made to them to ensure they're properly adjusted. I've been restoring these cars for quite some time and I've never seen a float fail. There should be no need to replace the floats. It sounds like the carb is misadjusted. Have you checked the float level on teh sight glass on the front bowl at idle? If so where is the level sitting? It should be half way up the glass.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check the rear sightglass with a mirror when I get home; however the front sight glass indicated a float level of halfway. I was planning on taking the carb apart tonight anyway so i'll be able to adjust them.

I would not take the carb apart without getting the parts needed to assemble it back together again.

I should've mentioned, I've already purchased a rebuild kit. I would never try and take apart a carb without having one on hand haha.

You won't be able to see the rear sight glass with the carb on the engine. I'd look elsewhere for the issue before dismantling the carb. I suppose it couldn't hurt to rebuild the carb as you don't know if it was done to a high standard and you can of course rule it out as a possible suspect. But it sounds to me like you have a different issue. Can you see fuel dumping into the primary butterflies at idle?
