83 GSL won't idle
 

Hi,
I have a 1983 RX7 GSL and it won't idle. I've already changed the fuel filter, emptied the gas tank and put new gas in, and changed the oil. I'm 14 and this is my first car and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong. Any help would be great. Thanks

What is your idle RPM set at? Mine has to to hit about 11 or 1200, but of course it has been bridgeported.

Well it's supposed to be at 750 but it won't even try to idle there, I can't find the idle screw to adjust the RPM either. It will idle roughly if I keep the choke open, but even then it has to be above 1000 or it dies immediately.

i'f its going "Brap Brap Brap" then dies you might be the owner of a bridge ported engine. their is a thread about ajusting the idle

I would start by increasing your idle speed. That adjuster screw is located right be the cables where they attach to the carb.

The cause of your issues is probably a vacuum leak. So you'll have to go through all of the rubber hoses making sure that they are intact.

Thanks for all the help, I found the idle screw but when I turned it nothing changed. I'm sure it has not been bridgeported, as I know the person I got it from and they are sure it has not been bridgeported. I haven't checked all the hoses yet but that will be my next step.

yea i'd say if its not changeing when you ajust the screw then you may have a vac leak

If you have found the correct screw, then turning it in should raise the idle. Make sure that this is the one just forward of the cable attachments.

There are one or two other screws on the side of the carb, which are very easy to find. These (or there might be only one, depending on the year of the carb) will control your idle fuel mixture. These do not control the idle speed, and you won't want to mess around with them until you find the source of your issues and get them fixed.

You probably have vacuum leak had sam issue with my 83 and it was a vacuum leak your gonna have to change some stuff till you find whats causing it.
