Why?

gracer7-rx7 11-29-09 09:52 PM

There is a lot to be changed in order to make that happen. Not worth the money really so "Why?" is a great question.

Read this thread to learn about someone that started making parts to do this. Never materialized.

the 6 speed tranny is big bucks better off with an rx8 tranny

rx8 tranny is better, more geared for our rotaries as well. the only down fall of the 8 tranny is the synchros, but if you go with gl4 or 5 instead of the recommended 3 you are fine.

from my understanding the miata tranny is also the same bolt pattern as the 8. a couple guys from 8club have swapped for miata trannies since they have a different gearing, plus, they, along with the 09 rx8 trans have a direct access plate on the side of the transmission, pre 2009 rx8s you have to open the case entirely to inspect your gears if you suspect damage. where as the 09 up you just unbolt the 1 foot by 8 in or so plate and you can look.

Not sure why you guys say the RX8 tranny is 'better'. Better how?

Remember the RX8 is rated at lower HP and Torque than a stock FD.

The RX8 is 'known' to have a weak tranny that doesn't stand up to a lot of abuse. Or at least that is the feedback I hear from some people I have met at autocrosses. The FD trans is a good unit that will take a fair amount of abuse.

FE tranny is not better than an FD, but it is going to be a better match than a supra tranny cost wise. and the pre 09 transmissions are the junk ones with the weak synchros. 09 up has a completely new gear setup, with reverse being in the upper left as opposed to the original lower right.

if i could give one bit of advise, i would say leave the fd tranny in. and swap out your rear end if you want a different gearing. being turbo you don't want a 6 speed with close gears.

The RX-8 tranny is not much better than the FD. Depending on who you talk to it has less torque capacity than the stock 5 speed. That would make the effort a complete waste of time.

If gearing is the issue change the ratio of the rear end, not the transmission. There are plenty of ratios available and it's much cheaper. (If fuel economy is the issue then just change the engine.) If there is an ego problem that makes you uncomfortable with only 5 gears then don't be a wimp, find a 7 speed and adapt that.

I think the Getrag has been mated to a rotary but it's a lot of work and if you're going to do it there are better options out there for high torque and streetable transmissions. See the links in the 3rd Gen FAQ on what's been done here.

There are 1 or 2 guys that run a T56 with their 20b's. They need the torque capacity, as they are shearing teeth off of third when they roll into boost.

There are people who are breaking trannys in their 8's with stock power. There is no way that a 8 tranny would hold up to a FD's torque curve w/ the 13b-rew. Stick with the factory 5-speed. It's good for 500+whp on the 13b. 20b is a different story...

yeah it was pain in the butt!!!! i've try the 8 tranny in it!!! the shift knob is shorter it hit the dash!!! yeah i agree the stock tranny is way stronger than the rx8 tranny.......what about the Chevy Powerglide Transmission
they have the adapter for the 13B n 20B!!!! look pretty sweet!!
