1st gen RX7 HID conversion
Hello I'm wanting to swap out my halogen lights for HID lights. Is there anything big I need to take into consideration? I measure the housing and it's 7inches and I've found tons of 7in round HiD lights on Amazon and the likes. What Im wondering is can I just buy any of those lights and gen the necessary relays and such and get them to work? Or are there any HID specifically designed for 1st gens that I can use?

There isn't a specific HID kit for a first gen, but I would recommend getting the headlight harness from Black Dragon. Datsun 240Z, 260Z, 280Z, 280ZX and Mazda RX7 Auto Parts & Accessories
The reason you want this is because the first gen RX-7 passes the headlight voltage through the ignition switch. This harness will add some relays to correct this. I have the harness and their headlights with halogen bulbs. It's not HID but does work much better. |
I talked to my friend who did HID on his miata, so he recommended the brands JW Stereo and Retrofit Source. I'm probably going to get a pair of those and then get that headlight harness that KansasCityREPU recommended from Black Dragon. I'll let you know how that goes.

So i bought that heavy duty harness and it says 90/100w so does that mean 90w total low beam and 100w total high beam OR 90w per headlight low and 100w per headlight high. If the first option would getting bigger realys increase the wattage because the hid i was buying were 110w low 140w high beam

You could go with HID H4 bulbs like these and still use the Black Dragon harness. Of course, you will still need the 7" round headlight housings.

Retrofitting HID bulbs in OEM headlights won't give you the true benefits of a HID system and likely just blind oncoming drivers. The HID system must be designed from the ground up. The only HID equivalent solution is LED headlights in this thread of mine:

I decided to go with a rallylights.com with some weaker led bulbs that were rated at 100/80w for the the pair I'll let you know how that goes when they come in.

If you REALLY want to make it nice and original, use OE Mazda relays and the correct Yazaki 4-pin connectors. I have some leftover from Project OldTree that I'll donate :) |

Here's what I went with looks stock but the light difference is immense in comparison to the halogen. Those rallylights.com 7" rounds i used just fit in the housing with 0 modification so it was very easy.
