1988 RX-7 Build Help
 
Hey guys! My name is travis and I just recently picked an 88 N/A RX-7. I want to get more power into her and I was looking at turbo setups, I’m new to cars and I was wondering what I would need to get a turbo into my 13b. I know I’ll need an intercooler setup, turbo manifold and turbo, but what other parts do you guys recommend. The motor was just rebuilt with new seals from angel motorsports about 750 miles ago. I’m looking to do the install myself and I wanna stay around $3k or so less is better seeing how i only spent 3 on the car. Thanks guys!

What Turbo kits can I add onto my non turbo RX-7?
There are no longer kits formally made at the time of this post, however there are companies from time to time that do make available non turbo to Turbo Kits. Because most of these companies stop building the kits, or go out of business in short time, it is impossible to keep active links for them.

congratulations.

the first question you need to answer is how much power is "more power"? what is it you want the car to do? turbocharging is fine, and it is your car to do what you wish, but as someone offering advice, i'd just like to get a fuller picture of what i'm advising.

the short answer is you will need a minimum of:
- something to control your engine (aftermarket, piggybacks or find a way to adapt a T2 ECU)
- fuel (pump and injectors),
- some form of a throttle hat
- cooling (you're going high compression with turbo, plus you will be adding a coolant line to the turbo itself - i think you'll need to mitigate the extra load on the stock system),
- exhaust, ,
- pipe lengths and bends (charge pipe will need fabrication)
- oil filter pedestal and hydraulic fittings (you will need to find an oil source for the turbo and you will also need to drain it back to the pan)
- T2 front cover or modify your stock one
- possibly a clutch (not necessary to have it before you complete the build though)
- gauges (oil pressure, water temp, boost, oil temp.) - personally, i would also recommend either AFR or EGTs as well, but by no means necessary
- don't forget tools - you will need to have a good set of sockets and wrenches, screwdrivers, a test light, wire strippers, and a few other items.

i'm sure there are probably other little odds and ends to consider, and that has not taken the car into consideration yet because stock brakes and suspension may not be reliable depending on how far you plan to go.

only thing i know about Angel is what i see on youtube. they seem to be decent guys and seem to know what they are doing.

now, i mean no disrespect by this, so let's get that out the way. that said, $3k or less may be possible, i don't know, but i would be skeptical with reliability. you may be turning your, admittedly "underpowered", but probably reliable car into a time bomb. so that's my first concern. my second concern is you have posted that you're "new to cars" - you left it at cars, and did not specify rotaries, so my concern is that you're getting in over your head. there are some bolt-on parts you can use from a T2 that can help you cut down on the fabrication aspect of your proposed turbo project - they are not all ideal, but they will work, but make no mistake, fabrication of some kind will be involved - at the very least, with the intercooler install and exhaust.

the unsolicited part of my advice would be drive the car. do basic upgrades - older rotaries are extremely responsive to exhaust work - and feed your mind in the interim. learn about engines, and how things work, maybe if you can afford it, pick up a skill (welding, wiring, etc.). maybe use your car as a learning tool. maybe choose a system and explore it, maybe pull it apart and look at things, then re-assemble. track down an oil leak and fix it - that sort of thing. that way, when you dive in you have a better chance of success.
