1987 Rx7 base automatic to manual swap details
 

I recently got a clean adult owned 1987 base model automatic with 76,000 miles. I would like to do a manual transmission swap but I need to know what mods need to be done and what parts are required for the swap.

On a side note a friend of a friend has a low mileage turboII transmission.

Some things I can think of:

Transmission
clutch master cylinder
slave cylinder
clutch line
cross member
drive shaft?
gauge cluster?
ecu?
shifter boot
clutch pedal

If you put that TII trans in you will need TII starter,etc.

Lets give you an additional parts list for N/A:
Flywheel that pertains to the engine series.
Clutch,pressure plate,throw out bearing,Pilot Bearing(do not FORGET THIS ITEM)
Starter.
Steel clutch line on firewall( that joins to master..then the mentioned Steel line, to flex line,to Clutch slave)
Your Transmission mount will most likely have to be Fabbed as the Auto Car has a different body mounting than that of a stock manual car.
Clutch and brake pedal assembly are one unit.(so to speak.2 pedals,on a bracket assembly)
Shifter would be nice so you can change gears..lol!

I'm sure if I forgot anything that someone will chime in.

Custom transmission mounts? This does not sound good. I wish there was someone who had done this before that could fill me in on the details.

ANYTHING that you can think of has already been done to these cars.The only thing us to Find it in the Forum.The members of the Forum gratefully oblige the forum with threads on what they did..BUT that requires a Search.

An Auto car to manual is done at least twice a week..I would say..easy!

I only ask because I have a manual car converted to automatic when I did my swap. I have the pedals and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

I am in cental nj. That rotary resurrection site is great. I does not mention using a turboII transmission. Can it be done and what else would I need?

The reason why I just posted N/A stuff is that you would get into other parts,and be more expensive.
BUT if you want to go there:
You need all the parts for a Auto to Manual swap.still need the Fabbed cross member.you can't get around that.
You need a TII Flywheel,Clutch.pressure plate,throw out bearing,PILOT BEARING( and I am stressing this as the AUTO Trans did not use one when it was installed!).
TII clutch slave/Different than an N/a slave)
TII Starter.
TII driveshaft..
NOW,What Rear DIFF are you going to use?...N/A?.then you need a Conversion shaft to run the TII Trans to to the N/A Differential as they will not just Plug and play..different flanges.
OR you can just Toss a Whole Rear TII diff and axles in and hook up the TII trans to the TII diff and call it a day.

Thanks for all the information. The guy that has the turboII trans also has a rear but another guy wants that. If I can get them both with the drive shaft for a reasonable price I will.

Is installing the rear a pain in this car?

Yes...and No..
It depends on how you do it,and how many hands you have.
One Person..meh..gets to be a little Hectic.
two people it is cake.
Dropping the whole subframe at the back is best,that way you can quickly access the Bolts and just lift and separate the Diff from the frame.There is no trying to put a Big object in a crammed spot!

Tell ya what: When you Decide to Take the Subframe down,I WILL tell you HOW to do it.
All you have to do is PM ME.I'll give you the step by step.
I should be qualified..I have done like 10 in 8 years,and BY MYSELF!..(friends say: you're gonna do what?..OH!..I gotta game that day..)
