1985 rx7 gsl se
I recently bought a 85’ gen 1 and wanted to know best ways to get its power up? I got it through an auction for a steal of $200 after tax and she runs and drives. Have to replace the starter but everything else seems somewhat fine. Is there any tips / things I should get checked / rather important upgrades you guys would insist on getting done? |
The best thing you can do is replace the stock exhaust with a fill Racing Beat Streetport exhaust system. Maybe some Pineapple Racing sleeves. Other than adding forced induction and risking damaging the engine, you are really limited on anything else that you can do that will produce measurable power.
I would first start by making sure the base essentials are taken care of. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, replace the coolant, oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, trans and differential oil, replace the belts, inspect and replace cooling hoses as need as well as vacuum lines. Make sure yo have good brakes and tires and no suspension rot. Once the reliability factors are addressed then I would consider mods. But not until then. |

I wanted to put a turbo and BOV on it at some point. Definitely going to go check out the factors @mazdaverx713b listed first, but wanted to make it really hard to beat if in a street race, as well as something fun to practice drifting on |
Adding a turbo to stock internals on a GSL-SE engine can cause engine failure. The engine was not designed to be run with boost. The engine has a dynamic chamber, which you see when you open the hood. Says RE-EGI on it. That dynamic chamber stores pressure from the intake pulses and when the engine reaches a certain rpm threshold, I think its over 4000 rpm, the pressure is released into the engine for a supercharging effect. So, it is a boosted engine of sorts, as are the N/A 13B's found in the FC. No 6 port engine makes for a really good boosted car. You will want a 4 port 13B for that. The GSL-SE's are getting harder to find and they aren't quick enough to win a bunch of stop light drag races these days. They are a joy to drive and are a wonderful car with a few good bolt on's.
