1984 LSD rebuilding questions
 

Hi
Has anyone rebuilt a clutch pack from a 1985
live axle.
I would like some parts source recomendations and
an idea of the difficulty.
I live in El Cajon CA, is there someone here who can be
reccomended to do the complete job.

Generally there isnt much wear on the clutchplates in the LSD, usually the thrust washers and cone springs are the first to wear out.

Stock mazda parts are reccomended, I would think usually you can get away with just replacing the 2 thrust washers and 2 cone springs.
If the plates themselves have seen a lot of wear the cost can add up quick.



My LSD was rebuilt completely with thicker clutch plates and thrust washers which are available at www.mazdatrix.com
My diff is insanely tight. I would'nt reccomend going too crazy, the low speed turn in sucks with the LSD basically locked... maybe 1-2 thicker plates and the thicker thrust washers if you really want a tight LSD.

I replaced all the plates with thicker ones. Its a little too tight.

Now Im not sure if you can get away with leaving the pinion gear installed and not touching the gear settings. If thats ok the LSD refurb would be very easy, require no specialty tools, and would be as easy as removing the axles and 3rd member, pulling the carrier out, apart, and swapping in new plates. You will need a torque wrench to torque the bolts to the proper torque.

If reseting the gears is required you will need a few more parts (crush tube, pinion parts)
and specialty tools like a dial gauge to measure the backlash...
Read up on how to setup the gears, and you will see if its too indepth for you to do.

Hopefully someone will chime in with an answer about the need to reset the gears. If its not needed just go for it !!!!!!!

He should be able to find some local suppliers in his area. Go through the phone book under repair shops and find those that offer rebuild service for rear ends. They should be able to give you some suppliers.
