13b engine question
3 Attachment(s)
i am wondering what is the difference between 13b motors. are all of the blocks the same. if i got a full built motor out of an earlier car such as a fc would the block work on a fd? would this motor which is carbed and was in a buggy work in my fd if i switched out the carb and etc stuff. this might just be another stupid question from a rotary newbie.

No, there are significant differences between years. A 13B from an FC is very different from a 13B-REW from an FD. Intake port locations/size, engine mount locations, front cover design, as wells as many other small things differ. The pictures you posted are too tiny to see anything, but sticking an earlier 13b into an FD would be a lot of work and a step backwards.

fc and fd engines r 6 port but how they mount in the engine bay may be different between the two. never owned one so i can't be for certain. those images u posted aren't clickeable so i can't tell anything. if it is 6 port u may be able to use it in the fd. someone with more experience in this will chime in soon.
ok he beat me to it so never mind. |
FD engines are not 6-port. They're a 4-port design just like a TII 13b, but the ports are much larger and shifter further up the irons. Only S4 & S5 NAs (and S3 GSL-SEs) have 6-port 13b engines.

he is the one that is in the rail now. he doesnt know what year they are from thats the problem.

yes, i wasn't thinking straight at the time. the turbo engines r 4 port which looks like what u have. but i thought the intake to engine flange on the turbo engines had a different bolt pattern than what it looks like u have. the blue one is definitely a late model due to the lack of coolant passage in the rotor housing for the intake. did the SE engine not have that passage and maybe it's housings from an SE with 4 port irons but then the aluminum water pump housing dismisses that idea.
|
These are pictures of two different engines I take it? The rear iron isn't the same on them. The number of holes under the oil filter is different.
It looks like a 12A to me. Whoever owns this car can't read what cast into the housings apparently. It's NOT a 13B-REW, or even a 13b. Check here for what various rotary irons look like: http://www.rotorhead.ca/articles/200...te-comparison/ Here are a few reference pictures from an REW build: http://www.banzai-racing.com/gaglio/...uild_front.jpg http://www.banzai-racing.com/gaglio/...ebuild_top.jpg http://www.banzai-racing.com/gaglio/...components.jpg |
it does look like a 12 im so glad i didnt buy it. you guys really saved me a headache thanks for the great info.

basically about every three years it so mazda changed engine designs. sometimes it is subtle, sometimes more obvious. they are all marked as 13b or 12a, but thee are different versions of each and the only way to identify the different versions is to be familiar with the outer and sensor layouts.

wow.... that article http://www.rotorhead.ca/articles/200...te-comparison/ is very helpfull many thanks

20Bs are generally between $2000 and $5000. My local importer sells them for $2700. The official rating from Mazda is "280 PS" on the 20B, but it is somewhat more then that. 400HP is possible on the stock twin turbos. Like any engine swap, you can mount it in any vehicle if you can cut and weld. Mounting it in 1st and 2nd gens just means creating a set of mounts and solving some minor clearance issues. 3rd gens are more complicated. |
ok so now ive heard about a 26b thatmazda hasnt released to the general public claiming 4 rotors. is this just a myth or is this realistic?
|
The R26B is Mazdas race engine, used famously to win LeMans in 1990. It is generally not available to the public and only available internally and to special factory sponsored race teams. Getting your hands on one would be flat out impossible .
|
thanks 4 the info

R26B ...wow that would b sum noise on the srteets wow....:icon_tup:
|
|
is that a 26 shaft or is it the ausi aftermarket shaft for the 4rotor kit?
|
I made it with two 13B shafts.
|
any real hope of running it?
|
This shaft was done as a test. I will be running a different shaft that is jointed with a taper instead of threads like this test shaft.
