1.5 way vs 2 way kaaz LSD
 

Hello, I was wondering if someone could explain the difference between the two types of limited slips. Also which would you prefer for a road race application?

1,5 way for road and race, 2way for drifting.


In short, 1,5 way diff gives full lock when accellerating, and 50ish(moderate) lock on descelleration. This gives a more stable car under heavy braking in gear and engine braking alone.

2way diff gives full lock on accel and decel, and it makes for a very unstable car under decel as you have full lock, and no "free running" wheel that provides direction.

PS, the KAAZ is a mehanical diff. The noises it makes is borderline silly at times. Everyone and their mother, including you at first, will think something is seriously broke back there, but its normal. The sounds is very notisable under low speeds combined with hard turning. There are other less noisy diffs out there if you need something upgraded.

2 way is basically an expensive welded diff that clunks instead of skipping the inside wheel as much.

When it comes to balls out professional racing, with a highly skilled driver, 2 way is the way to go. 1.5 has always been lauded as the LSD for beginner road racers, which is why it is perfect for most people. 2ways promote understear and instability while braking, both of which can be counteracted in a true money/time/skill/engineering is no issue race scenario.

I think a 1.5 sounds more suited for you though.

This might sound as a silly question, but can a 1,5 LSD be used for a beginner drifter? Or is it better to go straight to 2-way?

I dont believe a 2 way is more suited for skilled drivers. SKilled drivers have to have the option to induce more rear break with downshifts. A 2 way doesnt give you options. You will just have to downshift a lot less aggressive to prevent rear lock up... meaning you will have to sorta pussy foot into the apex. tossing precious time away. The more comfortable you feel while being aggressive is key.

Not really, he's talking about road racing. I'm talking about drifting. I'm basically just wondering if a 1.5 way could also be used for entry-level drifiting...my guess is yes since I'm not planning on doing any competition.

To answer your question, absolutely.

I've seen open diffed S13s win amateur competitions. Heck, I used to take my old Volvo station wagon on the hills and E-brake slide the downhill turns like nothing, lots of fun.

i will only use 1.5 way for my car, 2way is for drifting use.

A two way is awsome and definetly the way to go i ran one for two years and trust me there arnt very many times on the street ur gunna rip hard enough around corners to have to worry about lock up and when down shifting as long as ur not dropping two gears fast or anything stupid you will absolutely avoid lock up
