MD People please read
 

I have a 1988 RX7 GTU. I am in the process of getting the parts necessary to convert it to a T2..and am only missing a hood + fuel pump now. But beyond that fact, the "local mechanic" which is Kearney's Auto (it's the only shop I know that has ever delt with rotary's..) said a quote is impossible for installing all this stuff. Upwards of 2000 dollars. I am honestly not willing to pay that much to have all these parts installed (Complete turbo engine with intercooler, Left-hand drive spec turbo wiring harness, Turbo ECU, Knock control box, Turbo boost sensor, Turbo throttle cable, Stock turbo fuel pump, Stock turbo intake duct with blow off valve, Stock t2 precat/downpipe and midpipe, T2 hood with scoop, Turbo air flow meter, Aftermarket boost gauge, Turbo flywheel, Turbo clutch kit, Turbo tranny, Turbo starter, Turbo driveshaft, Turbo rearend, Turbo halfshafts.) Now my question is..WHO in the Maryland area has done this swap, and can help me do it...Or does anyone know a shop who will install all this for mildly cheap? I'm in Howard County, Maryland, will drive anywhere in Maryland and possible the Virginia's for a good shop or person :)

wow, that's a long list of stuff. I don't know much, but I'd be willing to help out for free or something if you plan on doing this alone, since you're in the area and I need to learn more. =]. Try asking in the "Maryland Guys" Thread too, alot of knowledgable guys and gals in there.

The swap is very expensive.. its alot easier to just buy a T2.. that's what i was told.. if you want to sell ya 7.. sell it to xony.. he'll surely be glad to buy it from you and you can buy ya self a T2.

just do the work yourself.. not that hard to drop a motor in and go from there.....

shit go buy a shop manual.

BTW - For the fuel pump, walbro @ ebay is your best bet.

adrock I would just buy a t2. The 88 NA are a dime a dozen. Plus I have a complete t2 swap in my vert and it took a good 6 months after the swap to fix little things here and their with the wiring and poping fuses and all that stuff. You can get yourself a nice t2 for 4k and sell your NA for a little less. Its not worth all the headaches if you as me.

I'd volunteer myself to do the work but hopefully sometime this week or next my garage will be consumed with installing a new motor in my FD and being the first to successfully run the megasquirt ecu in an FD.

If you have your own space to get the job done, I'll be more than willing to come to you to do the work there but personally, I don't have the space to take on another car at the moment.

Let me know how you are going to handle things and I'll PM you my contact info.

The swap is easy to do . . . if you know all the parts are good.

It's much easier to do if you're not trying to maintain the stock ECU :D

yeah, i would suggest just doing it yourself... it'll save you lots of money and you'll learn tons about the car. I've learned tons about my car just tearing it apart trying to fix it :). I'm sure tons of guys will be willing to come over sometimes and help. maryland guys are nice :)

Yeah, I know all the parts are good. Motor, tranny, and turbo ECU are all *new*. Everything else is ~50k miles on them. And, to the expensive comment, the buying of all this is already in process :) so, yeah. Anyways, my friend from school has an open area for me to work on it, and my uncle is lending me an engine hoist. Whenever I find out when all this is going down I'll reply back again :D

Edit: *buy a T2*=Cannot do that. This car has been in the (not immediate) but, FAMILY, since '88 when it was bought. If anyone read my thread when I was GOING to sell it, my mom's friend sold it to me after pretty much taking up space for 15 years, it was driven until 1990 when her daughter had a car accident and a tree fell on her SUV. It would devistate her if I sold this car. And also, this is a 45k miles chassis/everything else, buying a T2 with 90k+ miles and an engine about to blow / just rebuilt..no. I like the reassurance that nothing is going to go horribly wrong with the body of the car for a little while :). I think this swap is next best thing I could do, seeing as I obviously don't like any of the new cars on the market (I've smacked myself across every car possibility to buy, and the only thing I end up looking at are FC's, FD's, and RX8's..I don't want anything but a rotary. But anywho, can't buy a T2 :D

The Kearney's rebuilt the motor and put a custom downpipe/high-flow cat/catback in my FD. They do good work, but IMO, they don't know much about anything beyond the 1st gen 7s. If I knew then what I know now, I probably wouldn't have had them do any engine work on my car. They are solid in other areas, but concerning turbo rotaries, I think PBC in Chantilly, VA and RP Performance in Manassas, VA would be better bets. PBC is probably less than an hour from you on a good traffic day.
