Yup, even our Mxxx builds are quite pricey once you get all of the upgrades you'd need to run a turbocharged car, lambda control, logging, etc etc.

Damn. I wonder how it compares to my old reliable microtech lt10. It should do some really great and out of this world things for 7k

They aren't comparable. Not even in the same category of products. One controls an engine, and one runs an engine.

Sirlaughsalot please educate me on the difference. I guess i thought i knew about what an ecu did but i guess i have a lot to learn. Does the motrc give you more power or better delivery of that power?

Microtech = You Set Values, it does it's best to kind of keep those. There's VERY LITTLE LOGIC. It's just set it and go. Doesn't do well for huge temperature swings, altitude change, if you somehow lost control of one of your sensors, charge pipe fell off, etc

MoTec = You can build logic tables upon logic tables of control in which if something happens, it triggers a dozen other things with it. The depth of the programming allows you to run a vehicle CLOSER to it's limits while running safer. This is because when it trips one of your built in flags - knock, EGT temp, boost control, etc, it CONTROLS the motor back to your preconfigured safety margins. The software is intuitive and easy to spot vehicle faults. You most definitely get what you pay for.

Until you get into OEM Grade like dSpace, MoTec is in a league of it's own with aftermarket engine control units.

Short Answer: You'll make more power for longer on MoTec if you know what you're doing.

Damn sounds bad ass. Wish i had 7000 bucks laying around. I would be all over it. But wait even if i had the cash to spend who tunes motec? Either way the truth is i wish i had a motec with a good tuner. I love reliability. The cost of rebuilds for our motor are not getting cheaper. I know back when imsa were running the 3 rotor rx8 at the 24hr rolex they ran motec

Does anyone know anyone who tunes motec

Shane T has done a TON of MoTec Rotaries, including the 20B from Lucky7Racing and this MONSTER (I hope the video shows up... This is exactly how I'd do an FD)

I've seen them do work that was pretty commendable over the years but it seems as if they've shut down? Unfortunate since Lemon/Mazdatrix is (from what I've been told) in Signal Hill is getting out of the business as well.

Edit: Sorry, Shane T has not gone out of business but Twins Turbo from what I've heard. Shane T is someone whos brain I'd like to pick RE: tuning advice.

dguy, I'm going to end up doing rotary engine development/support with an EMtron KV8 ECU. Starting up a thread for it too... Proper motorsports grade shit is the best! :)

Truth. And congratulations! I was almost able to pick up a dev M1 GPR off of ebay for peanuts but I spaced and it went for next to nothing :(

I'm planning to get Brian to tune my motec (M150) when I get the car back. He's been running an M800 on his own car forever and used to be a tuner at Speed1 years ago in addition to getting called on by some of the heavy-hitters in the communityfor tuning/advice. He's stepped away from the forums (TitaniumTT) to focus on a more lucrative white collar career but he still absolutely knows his shit!

Working with Shane Techlenburg for my M130 GPR Rotary upgrade. If you'd like to follow, I'll update on my Spic Racer GT40R thread.

fendamonky 09-17-19 07:42 PM

Yeah, I'm happy to admit when my ambitions outstrip my skills... So I towed my car out to a shop in California (from the DC area) and they're taking care of the upgrade. I'm pretty sure I'm about to spend more on Motec stuff than I did for the original purchase of my FD!!! But I'll be damned if it won't be solid at the end of it all!

I'm certainly interested in what you guys find though! Do you plan on taking full advantage of the M130 by going DBW? I've been watching a LOT of webinars from them and the capabilities of the M1 computers is just incredible..

What shop out in Cali? There's a MoTec dealer out here that's been trashing wiring harnesses and screwing up tunes pretty bad... Can't say much, but my friend is in a $10k+ lawsuit with him.

It's not a motec dealer, they thought about becoming one but the hoops weren't really worth it for them.

The shop is called 5523 Motorsports, they're down in Escondido and usually cater to the Nissan/piston crowd. I've known both owners for the better part of a decade and trust their OCD/knowledge. For me, the fact that they're willing to say "I don't feel comfortable doing that" is a HUGE sign of integrity and a perk!

I've actually contemplated reaching out to some folks here about potentially flying them in for a day to apply the base/break-in tune once all the wiring and resto work is done.

The Spic Racer M130 schematic (so far):

I'm not familiar with Motec specifics, but good idea to double-check if A26 should go to switched ignition (key switch) and B12 should go to a permanent battery 12V wire. If the ECU will be driving them directly, don't forget to run wires for the boost control solenoid, tachometer (if equipped), and fuel pump relay trigger(s). If you have spare analog pins, I would run at least one (plus 5V and ground) in the cabin for a Boost knob or Traction Control trim knob.

Hey scotty305 appreciate the feedback, some good stuff.

Just noticed I cut off A01 - A13 on the snip, which include 8 Ignition drives (4 used for T/L F/R, one tach output, and three unused).

To you comments:
  • A26 is indeed +12V switched, though B12 is not going to be used.
  • Boost Control - thanks, I left it out while transposing the M84 schematic to the M130. Good call. Now Half Bridge 4 (OUT_HB4).
  • Fuel Pumps (x3) - (cutoff in snip) running off Half-bridge 2 (OUT-HB2) via Solid State Relay so I can PWM output by load.
  • Tach Input - (cutoff in snip) using a dedicated ignition output channel (IGN_LS5)
  • Control Knob / Trim - I like the idea and plans to incorporate a Motec Rotary Controller into the CAN network in the future.
Also realized I haven't incorporated the Flex-fuel sensor; so I've add that to Universal Digital 7 (UDIG7)

Most of the unused inputs/output I simply terminate in a DTM connector for future potential use.

If you're wondering about a Motec M130 GPR Rotary project cost, I just answer that very questions on mySpic Racer GT-40R thread .

Updates available on my build thread:
  • In-cabin harness map
  • Engine bay harness map
  • Updated pin-out
Unless specifically requested otherwise, I will not update this thread with my build progress any more. Please reference that thread.

No map/emap

Getting the initial map from Shane, I discovered an unexpected shortcoming with the M1 series. The important mapping capability dates back to the gold box units (e.g. M4, M84, M48, Mx00). There is no MAP/EMAP mapping! EMAP can only be monitored and logged. No leads on future incorporation.

That said, I continue to be impressed the more I learn the other capabilities. Latest one was the ability to map fuel pump pulse-width by fuel pressure. Super helpful to keep a huge pump's heat generation to a minimum. Just one of the so many cool discoveries. So in toto, I'm still very please with the choice. Just be aware of the change.
