rotaries in Milwaukee, WI region?
 

I'm moving to West Allis next summer and was just curious if I will be forever alone lol.

Hmmmm. I will have out of state plates and be registering it as a street modified recreational vehicle. From what I've heard, when it's registered as a recreational vehicle the exhaust law doesnt apply correct? I've heard rumors of highway 100 being bad and that the law is basically cop discretion.

From my experience with hwy 100, don't be doing something stupid(or driving a honda) and you won't have a problem with the cops. Perhaps I'm just lucky though? i've been pulled over twice in the FD, once in Brookfield on 94 and neither time has the cop said a thing about the exhaust(dp, catless, racing beat catback)


Hope you're car is not really low to the ground, Milwaukee's crumbling infrastructure is hell.

I've heard rumors about the roads. However, I drove the rx7 in Duluth, MN for 2 years. The roads there are absolutely terrible.

My car is registered as a Hobbyist vehicle. I've had countless encounters with cops/sheriffs right behind me, never got harassed once... i do have a clean driving record. ;D
The only time I'm out on hwy100 is for a show, maybe once a year. Otherwise i steer clear of that area due to the type of crowd it draw.

Good to know. I will be bringing my itb'd NA. The exhaust is currently pretty quiet, but i will be switching to a single exit which will be louder. The new job will be near highway 100 so I will just find ways around it.

Do you need to register the hobbyist plates every year or 2 years?

One and done. You don't have to renew them. And of course allows for modifications :icon_tup:

Excellent. I guess I misread the dmv page and thought it stated you had to register annually.

As far as exhaust tickets, I managed to talk my way out of it with the DA by saying that rotaries require specialized mufflers not available through regular means, and they are hard to find.

I keep a copy of the letter from the DA saying "my car can be loud" in my car at all times.

As far as HWY 100, it's not cool anymore except when something car-related is going on. For instance, this past July we had the Car Craft summer nationals come to town, and HWY was an absolute blast. Lots of cool cars. Otherwise it's mostly kids in FWD imports who drive like... kids in FWD imports. I've witnessed quite a few accidents caused by kids driving stupid.

I figured I would avoid highway 100 unless unless I need to go on it. Thanks for the info.

One more question: How is the traffic? I currently live in Portland, OR and it's terrible here. Albeit there is around 2.5 million people.

I'm surprised I haven't had an issue with my exhaust. Straight pipe all the way back ha. I'm in Oak Creek (just south of milwaukee). Black FD.

I have a repu and a rx8 on the east side of milwaukee. And traffic usually isn't an issue around here.

That's good to hear! Assuming I ever get my car back from the tuner maybe it will make it there. Saddest of lols

93 gt35r FD out of Waupun! About an hour north of Milwaukee area. I'll be attending MATC in the spring and frequent the Milwaukee area! HWY100 was always hit or miss for me, was better in past years than currently. To many cops and Honda kids!

Hobbyist or collector plates in Wisconsin are a one time fee. However, you must have a non-hobbyist, non-collector plate vehicle registered within the state too, or your hobbyist/collector registration will expire. Basically, your hobby car can't be your only registered vehicle. You'll have to keep your winter beater registered year round too. Probably a good idea, in the event of a "rare RX-7 breakdown" :)

I'm originally from Minnesota and they have similar laws regarding collector plates. It's odd to say, but I can't wait to get back where it gets cold haha. I will be purchasing a truck/suv/jeep/ when I get there.

So we're still planning on moving in July. Couple of questions. How's the city atmosphere in Milwaukee? Fun? Safe? Portland is generally safe except for one or 2 general areas. However, the homeless population in Portland is outrageous (this is probably due to the crazy high cost of living here).

I've been doing some reading and I'm slightly concerned. Living in large cities such as Portland and Honolulu, ethnic diversity is commonplace and I love it. From what I've read Milwaukee seems to be falling apart and has a large general segregation issue. Is this the case? Now I don't believe everything I read, but I just wanted some opinions from those who live there.

Where in the Milwaukee area are looking to live?

We'll be in West Allis when we first get there. My main concern was if the city itself is diverse in anyway. We may be looking at purchasing a home if we like it there. Any good neighborhoods with a variety of foods and grocers, etc?

Lived in Milwaukee for 31 years, and I can honestly say this city has gone down the drain. The public school system is not like how it used to be, just horrible. Anywhere in the inner city makes me feel unsafe, it's normal to be over cautious due to the ridiculous amount of reported crime we hear each day. If you support CCW, I advise you to carry when possible.

Yes, Milwaukee is known as the most segregated city in the US. I can easily draw a map of Milwaukee and pinpoint which area is occupied by a certain race.

Milwaukee is a small city, think of it as a mini Chicago. There are lots of festivities during the summer to enjoy. If you enjoy the night life there are multiple spots downtown. Aside from the negativity you hear, there are good things about this city you'll have to experience for yourself. Personally, I wouldn't invest in a home in the inner city. I have The safest areas are generally in the outskirts of Milwaukee. I jokingly tell people that if a city bus route doesn't reach you, you're in a safe zone.

I don't think i can be said any better than this. I currently live in Franklin and love it, no issues what so ever.
