No Engine RPM on MT
Howdy folks, I've got a car over here I'm working on that's running a turbo'd 13BT with a Microtech LT8 (or LT10; can't remember) that's showing no engine RPM while cranking on the Microtech software when online. The tach itself is bouncing but I'm not seeing the RPM variable on the data page change any. It's also reading all 0's while cranking as well when datalogging it.
Is there some sort of setting on the Microtech I may've goofed with on accident that would otherwise change trigger input settings? The car used to run just fine but now it ain't doin' a thing while cranking. No fuel and no spark from what I can tell. B |
Ok.
They dont usually show an rpm reading(some do some dont from what i have seen). BUT THE BEST WAY TO SEE IF YOUR GETTING A rpm signal on crank is to simply look at the unit it self. Get someone to crank the car and have a look at the ecu, watch the orange light. It should flash. If it dosnt flash your not getting an rpm signal. If it does flash that means you are. If your not getting a signal means your CAS is disconnected, or wiring has gone bad or CAS is bad. |
Thanks for the help man. I've got another question for you. The ground on the x4 box, if it's not grounded at the engine block I've had it completely fry on me but is there a chance that if it's not grounded at the engine block and it doesn't fry, that somehow it still went bad? Basically whats going on is BDC got the car going and was driving it around and then all of a sudden the coils stopped working. I forgot to tell him that the x4 box was supposed to be grounded on the block so it was just grounded on the body. Any help would be great! Thanks so far!

Yep, I think I was chasing my tail around on the cranking thing looking for RPM. The wiring on the MT harness wasn't modified any and it had run for several minutes prior to showing odd-running symptoms. The test I ran was the blinking orange light and yep it's blinking alright.
I checked for spark on both L1 and T1 and got zip. I think the XT-4 or whatever that box is called is messed up. B |
If its not grounded to the block. In most cars they do fry cause the earthing system in the car is rubbish.
Have a sniff of the x4 box. You will smell interesting smell in their if its fried. If you need a new x4 box Msg me. See if i can help you out. Best way to see if the X4box is fried. get a test light. And see if its grounding the coils. If its not grounding all of them then thats your problem. |
Yeah I've had one fry on me before and bad enough to smell as well as had obviously burned traces on the board. This one however is not fried and acording to Brian there is no signs of burned traces etc... If brian finds that if it's not grounding the coils then I'll see about getting an x4 from you. You wanna pm me a price with shipping? Thanks.

Ill pm you.
Best way to check if its fucked or not is to check if its grounding coils. If its grounding the coils then the coils them selves are fucked. Which leads are you not getting spark on? |
Well the coils are brand new lx92 coils so I'm kind of unsure how they would all go bad at once. I don't believe he can get a spark on leading or trailing at this point. Thanks for the help so far man it is much appreciated.

your using lx92 coil packs on an x4 box?
thats not a good idea. Alot of load on the x4 box. Get some mazda trailing coils or bosch coils. lx92 coils are good coils, but only driven by the crane cdi boxes. |
I've got crane fireball hi-6's on leading... Should I take out the x4 box? I remember asking many many people on this forum how to hook up the x4 box with the crane amps and lx92 coils and whatever the general consensus was that's how I did it.
|
Should have asked me
Ive done it plenty of times. Its very easy. Basically you wire up the Crane hi-6 box as per normal. Give it a main power through an 8 or 10 guage wire. Earth it in the same fashion. Then their is a 2 pin plug with a red and white wire in it. The RED wire goes to 12v ignition. THe white wire goes to the trigger on your x4 box. So for Leading 1 The white wire on the Crane box For leading 1(you need 2 boxes to set it up properly) goes to YELLOW on the x4 box. Then on your second crane box. The white wire goes to YELLOW/BLACK and this box becomes L2. Thats it. Dont CONNECT ANYTHING ELSE. I hpoe this helps. I have done the above method many times and just did it again yesterday. It works that way flawlessly. |
If you need a more indetail wiring diagram ill make one for ya let me know.

I'm thinking that's how it's done because it's been working for a while now until the ground was hooked up to the body instead of the block. I've also got lx92 on trailing, is this how you have it or do you do stock trailing? I am using the lx92 with no ignition box for trailings. THanks again for the help, you've been awesome!
|
We use mazda trailing coils(with no ignitor) or boch hec 715 coils for trailing.
Lx92 maybe abit much for the x4 to handle. |
interesting.... Maybe I should get stock coils with no ignitor then and put it back on. Again as always thanks a ton for the info. You wanna pm me that price for the x4 box?
