Microtech vs stock ecu on this car

Hey guys,

Ive got a series 4 88' with a microtech MTX8 in it getting its engine rebuilt at the moment. The engine is complete as well with a few other minor things but the MTX8 failed as they tried to start it. It was sent over the boarder to queensland, where microtech fixed it for free, well they didnt apparently cuz its still shit and broke. And its taking ages to get it in and working, it is now clocking over 3 months since I sent my red rocket away to get fixed.

but anyway, question is, should i revert to a standard stock ecu for my car? It is a non turbo, standard 13b six port engine so really there isnt anything there that needs a racing ecu. I got about 200 km to the tank before this rebuild, which is bloody hopeless, I mean I dont mind the bad economy but this isnt considered milage, more like yardage. As well as hard starts and a rich mixture I dont particularly like the microtech settings, well on this one, Im sure it suits a power hungry, modded fayste rotor but not a stock model. Im not racing the car or pushing it real hard or in any need of any more power, all I want is a workin rx7 for a daily driver so do you reckon stock or microtech? At the moment Im leaning over to sell the microtech and get a stock ecu.

the microtech can be an excellent computer when tuned well. but seeing as your application is n/a and the engine isnt ported agressively in any way or form.

If your confident you can get the stock ecu working correctly(READ EXTREMELY DIFFICULT) then do it. other wise keep the microtech.

SEND IT TO THE MICROTECH FACTORY WHICH ARE IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. NOT QUEENSLAND. the guys in queensland are a rip off and dont even know what the insides of a microtech look like.

also how did the microtech "fail", you sure the guys doing your work know anything about them?

As for fuel economy, ive tuned a few 6 ports that averaged around 400km to a tank.

a good tuner should be able to do that and more.

Yer the guys in queensland suck. But then again its all covered and they are doing it for free and at this stage wont be going into the car until it is tuned and tested.

Im pretty confident we can get the stock ecu working, I have found one and ordered one. My guys know what they are doing as far as I can tell. Yer i didnt think microtechs could fail but this one did and its very weird, there is something wrong with the primary coil, only the secondary coil is operating, Dont know a lot about that myself but thats what briefly was told to me.

Yer the 400km to a tank sounds about right with a good tune, the only problem is I have to take it to John Blanch all the way to newcastle and I think that may take a while to be completed so I believe Il opt for a standard ecu but Il keep the microtech in the mean time and will get it tuned for the car at a later date when I dont need it as a daily drive.

thanks for the help

Sorry for high-jacking, but few words about the fuel. You can get it even better as 400 km. I know ppl. here (incl. myself) are tuning Microtechs to 10l for 100km.

I can go 450-480km on my S4 Turbo with lumpy motor which has 160.000km on it. With better compression, you should get even better results, when running NA you should do at least 10l to 100km!!

Just my 2p.

Yes you are right.

Youve gotta be kidding me???

400km??? dats hell good!! So thats with a properly tuned microtech correct? How bout a stock ecu, how many kms do you think you can get with that on a N/A? or how many did you guys get before you put the microtechs in?

Cuz if i can get 400km to a tank or 10l for a 100km with a Microtech Im bloody keeping it and getting it tuned.

The factory computer with all sensors working EXCELLENT, you will get 350-400kms a tank with conservative driving.
