Turbo Timmy I want some input!
Can you explain some details of your Microtech install? I just want to know your first hand expierience with the Microtech install. Were the directions thourough? How does the base map feel just driving around? Does it hesitate or buck? stinky? What do you not like about the product? What do you like?
|
Im curious to know also.

I didn't personally install it. If you can read a wiring diagram and are good with stereo installs you could do it. I am not real good with wires. ;) The wiring harness is labeled very clearly and easy to read. The base map isn't that good for racing (I wouldn't do it) but I was able to drive on a 300 mile trip and make 16-8 mpg so it's not too bad. It was a little stinky but no visible smoke.
The two gotchas for me was we hooked up the map sensor vacuum to the wrong place (we had it hooked to the throttle body which only sees boost) and we set the timing incorrectly (you have to lock the timing via a setup screen). All in all I'm very satisfied and could never had this much success without the help of Javier who installed it and Rolo who tuned it. I hope to put it on the dyno soon after I get my throttle body ported by BDC and fix my now slipping clutch. I ran a 14.6@96 and the clutch was slipping till the top of 3rd. |
My expirience with the stock turbo ECU makes it a real piece of crap. If all the sensors, settings, timing, tps and mixtures with new tune up crap isnt on target, the car hiccups all day long.
Are you getting none of this with the base map? How solid is your idle? Wait you said someone tuned it? Off the dyno?? Do you mean somone tuned it so that it would be a smooth running engine? |
It will run and all untuned but I wouldn't go around boosting it since there are spots that it may go lean etc. Every motor is different so they can't program for every case. You definitely need to get someone to tune it or tune it yourself on a dyno or at least with a wideband 02 sensor.
I (nor Microtech) say or imply that the base map is perfect and you can go out racing your car untuned. The instruction manual will lead you in the right direction to tuning it correctly but it is a process not something you can do like changing the spark plugs. If you understand the process and can follow it it will probably be easy. I got lost after setting the timing so I had to get help from a professional ;) |
How much did you pay for the tuning?
How close to stock are ya? (mods?) Do you have pics of the dyno for the first runs (presumably unaltered base map including AF ratio)? |

I haven't dyno'd yet, my clutch is gone. I heard that the stock clutch can only hold 250hp so maybe that is a good sign ;) Hopefully will be back up next week.

I'm just wondering about the base map. I have a DIY Wideband, but I haven't gotten a bung on my Downpipe yet, I was planning on doing it after I got my microtech installed.
Now then, the Microtech guys have been saying their base maps are FINE for driving around, and I thought he meant, under all circumstances. How do you know there are lean spots in them? |
I just used the stock 02 sensor to get it drivable, and the microtech will display those values under the logs.
|
The wiring schematic that comes with the microtech is A+ . So far my installation is going along fine. I'll probably finish it up later tonight. If you know how to solder or can repin each plug you'll have no troubles at all installing it.
|
Damn im getting anxious. My motor and ECU are going to arrive within days of eachother.
|
you'll be busy for awhile then :) Kinda now how things all come together isn't it.
|
Yeah, ill be busy for a few weeks. I mainly need to find someone to tune the car.
|
I'm having a guy in Sioux Falls do mine.. i dropped off the software earlier this week and i'll take it up for him to look at it and plug into my car shortly. I guess if he's good maybe you'll have to make a trip north :P
|
That might be possible if it was licensed. I need to keep it somewhat close, lol.
|
I am planning on breaking a new motor in with my Microtech, any thoughts? Is the base map decent enough I can break the motor in properly or should i break it in with the stock ECU and wiring.
|
you should have no problems breaking in a new motor with the microtech, i have broken in my motor before with a microtech,

Originally posted by Josepi Hey Dale, you guys have any A/F graphs of a base map on a COMPLETELY STOCK setup? Just curious about that lean statement above. If it's true, i'd like to see the graphs... :) the base maps are fine for a COMPLETLY STOCK turbo II meaning no exhaust changes, intake changes anything, if you have changed something you will need to add some fuel, just add a bit in the boost ranges, then get a WB 02 and tune away, when running in a motor you shouldnt be boosting it anyway so the maps will be fine for this, It states in the manual that the base map is for starting and getting to the dyno for proper tuning, every motor is different, it may have been a little lean on his motor but on your motor it may be rich, if his injecotors were a little blocked or fuel pressure a little low will also have big effects on things like that as well. <---completely stock...tis why I asked.
;) I feel I am taking the completely backwards approach to modding, however, I think it'd be cheaper in the long run. :D |
Originally posted by 10sec rx7 Fast fours and rotary mag did a comparo a few years back on Microtech, haltech etc with a completly stock S4 rx7, they said the microtech made more power than the stock computer before it was tuned, they said tuning time was half that of the rest of the computers and driveability was better than stock straight away. the base maps are fine for a COMPLETLY STOCK turbo II meaning no exhaust changes, intake changes anything, if you have changed something you will need to add some fuel, just add a bit in the boost ranges, then get a WB 02 and tune away, when running in a motor you shouldnt be boosting it anyway so the maps will be fine for this, It states in the manual that the base map is for starting and getting to the dyno for proper tuning, every motor is different, it may have been a little lean on his motor but on your motor it may be rich, if his injecotors were a little blocked or fuel pressure a little low will also have big effects on things like that as well. Dale I will be breaking the motor in with 720cc secondaries, and an FD pump so if anything I might be a bit rich, which is fine. The motor has a big streetport but I wont be boosting during break in or for that matter till I get a wideband in so I should have no concerns. |
