LT-8s and MSD

Hope this is my last MT question. :)

The MSD 6a doesn't jive with the MT. I've search here and the MT forums and all I've gotten is that they don't work together without some work. Either a mod to the MT itself or possibly signal conditioning between. Any want to explain why they don't work and what needs to be done to make them compatible? Thanks!

How do you have it hooked up?

I've had no issues with Crane boxes connected directly to the Microtech.

MT leading trigger wire to the MSD white trigger. MSD output to the coil. There really isn't much of a way to mess up the wiring. The car runs like that and I have leading spark but the idle is for shit and it breaks up badly over 4k. The MT is set to trigger on the leading edge and I'm thinking the MSD might want to see trailing edge. Won't be able to try that though because the engine just ate a bearing.

This from MT tech support. Thanks for the help guys! I really don't want to start bashing MT because I am becoming more fond of it the more I use it but this answer sucks! I understand the MSD is not their product and they don't have to support it but such a common component surely can warrant a good response. And I have wired a few MSDs (6a and DIS) through Haltech and never had a problem.

"I am sorry I cant help you with an MSD problem. Just make sure the car runs properly without the MSD then deal with the MSD issues.
MSD problems are very very commmon on all systems , when installing on stock, Haltech, Motec , Microtech... everything.
Tim."

Then this from the MT forum. This wasn't a MT tech talking but a respected tuner on the board none the less. I found he has recommended the ignitor to at least one other chap that has made it work. Now I know for a fact the Haltech doesn't require this. If I have to use one that's quite fine. I would like the technical explantion as to why it is required though.

"The MSD needs to see a signal that a coil would normally see, the microtech signal needs to be converted to the coil signal by the igniter,

it is the same with every aftermarket ecu they will all need the igniter"

I've wired several cars (mine included) where the stock ignitor was bypassed and the Microtech triggered a Crane HI-6 directly. However I have not tried an MSD box, so I'm not sure how they are different. The Crane has both a "high level" and "low level" input so that it can work with a standard trigger/ignitor/module/points or the reluctor trigger directly. If the MSD does not have this high level input then the trigger pulse from the Microtech may overwhelm it...Just guessing here though.

I guess you could leave the stock ignitor and run the MSD box as if you had the stock ECU.

Are you running the MT ignition out to the white trigger wire on the MSD?

I've been running my 6A with my LT8 quite a while...actually, it's been so long that I have no idea how I even wired it up.

No

No , i used the oem lines. You do not have to connect to the MT itself. Use the factory loom. You get ignition from that. All you need is a lead...I can take a picture if you like..

high boost remedies of block twisting.

I have designed and built 13B rotary tork plate assemblies. setup to make the engine rigid from twisting up to 20 pounds boost. ALOT cheaper and easy to install than pinning or dowels plus cost of machining. without pulling engine out. selling for 250.00 includes hardware and instructions.can send pictures if interested. my email-rrmay@tampabay.rr.com
