How to switch com ports on laptop?
My laptop is not recognizing my microtech. I contacted microtech and they said since I was using a USB port(my laptop doesn't have a serial connector so I had to get a serial to USB adapter) to connect that I needed to switch my USB com ports from 3 and 4(standard laptop setup for USB ports I guess) to 1 and 2 because microtech only uses com ports 1 or 2 to communicate. I've been all around in the control panel/system/hardware/device manager/USB stuff and can't figure out how to actually get this done. Any help would be greatly appreciated. stephen.

if you have xp try going into control panel, system, hardware, device manager then find what is connected to com one and change it over.

easy....right click on my computer
select manage from left click on device manager open up ports from the right right click on the usb/serial device select properties pull up port settings tab click advanced and then select com port number from the bottom of that window select port one or two and then hit apply or okay thats just off the top of my head but have mine setup that way and it works great... |
took laptop to a couple of geeks and they can not even find an option to switch the com ports on my laptop. I switched the com ports on my friends laptop and on my desktop by the method described above with no problems. Just gonna sell my laptop and buy a different one. also posted in microsoft xp website and they said the same as above. 399 dollar gateway......guess that explains.

I have gone through the same thing with my laptop. I have an HP, and appearantly, HPs dont allow you to change COM settings, so if yours is an HP, that is probably your problem. My friends Toshiba had no problem changing COM ports. The directions given in the above posts are correct, otherwise.
