Fc To Fd Ignition swap?
I Have just bought a FC T2 with a Blown engine, i have a Fd engine sat about doing nothing so if i put a LTX12 will i need to swap the Ignition?
I know it sounds daft but i dont want to do all the hard work to find i cant. Chris |
yes you will need to have it swapped over, the T2 and the FD use a totally different setup,
you could fit the T2 timing cover and CAS to the FD motor then it will work, Dale |
S**t!!!
So can i not use the LTX12 on a FD? or is what you are saying there is too diffrent models of the LTX12? Chris |
In order to switch ingition trigger types (as the FC and FD have different ones), you'll need to send the ECU back to Aus for a reconfigure. Depending on how handy you are and whether the engines are out of the cars, etc, another option is to simply use the FC front cover and CAS.

I thought the Fd Ignition was better than the Fc?

You can't just swap front covers and expect everything to just drop in.  The front cover dimensions are different - the FD front cover is "thinner"; if you just swap the front cover, the FC front cover will overhang the FD stock oil pan by at least 1/2".  The FD doesn't have the front gear to drive the FC CAS, so that needs to be addressed.
On top of that, the FD runs a true 3-channel ignition system - L1/2, T1, T2.  The FC runs a toggle system for the trailings, so it's L1/L2, T fire, T toggle.  The sequence to get either working are unique to each vehicle. Just to add more to the fire, the 13B-REW engine is a royal PITA to mount in an FC... -Ted |
TED get your site working!

So if i want to run a 13b-rew Ignition in ither a FC or FD how ever a pain in the rear i need to get the EMS set up to run the FD's System?
Chris |
Doh! After having been corrected by Ted, it would appear so.

It'll be safer to run the "FD" configuration, cause you can always run MSD's or three unique ignitors (to coils) to run the whole engine.  If you're going to run the FC configuration, you're basically stuck with using the FC trailing coil pack that uses the toggle. Good luck! -Ted |
Actually, since he's using an LTX12, he should be using 4 Bosch coils, so the only real issue is the crank triggering which is application-specific. :)
