Dongle to USB Problems

1 Attachment(s)
Don't have a 9pin input on my new laptop. Old laptop worked fine with Microtech. Got a USB to 9pin serial adapter and installed the driver on my new laptop. Can't get things to work and get an error message. See picture... will the Dongle work with the USB adapter or do I have to use an old school laptop?

Look at your device-manager at the COM number and if it is NOT "1" then change it to "1" !

But only if you already don't have a COM1. Most laptops, even though they don't have a physical serial port, still have a UART for COM1/COM2 for use with a docking station. So you might need to disable the internal COM1/COM2 and then assign your USB dongle to COM1/COM2.

Thanks for the replies. Still can not get it working. Microtech said the USB adapter would work, but that's the only help they offered.

I have it set to COM1. See picture. When trying to connect in the Microtech software I end up with the "Laptop tuning software has stopped working". See picture.

When trying to connect through COM2, it crashes the computer and the blue screen picture is displayed.

I have reinstalled the Microtech software, didn't fix anything. The USB adapter is an Aluratek AUS100 that I bought last month. Yes I am using the dongle/Microtech laptop adapter.

I'm not a computer guy, any suggestions on what else to try? I thought about maybe buying another USB adapter but that might be a waste of money.

And your USB COM1 isn't conflicting with a built in COM1?

If not, then it sounds as if the driver for the USB adapter is the problem. See if there is an updated driver. If you can identify who actually made it (for example, Prolific) then you can try several different drivers besides the officical Aluratek driver.

The CD the cable came with was not the latest driver. It works now. Thanks Aaron!
