boost cut feature....is it safe??

I like the idea of the boost cut (BstCUT) in the options screen, but it it 100% safe? I mean, it cuts all the fuel when it senses that the engine has gone past the preset boost #.....Is that a good idea (remove fuel) at the moment of possible detention? I'm iffy on setting it.

rx7_turbo2 10-26-03 09:27 PM

This was discussed on teamfc3s.

I think the consense was NO the boost cut feature is not all that safe. Brandon mentioned it's a "soft" cut but I don't really care, I don't want ANY fuel being cut while under boost. If it was an ignition cut like I believe the Haltech has it would be alot better. I would turn the boost and rev cut features off, but that's just my .02:D

HIMNI Racing 10-26-03 10:05 PM

:( kinda what I was thinking. So you think turning off all 3 diff cuts (REVlim,REVcut and BstCUT) is the safest? Damn, why didn't they just cut spark insted of fuel........ I can almost see cutting fuel being ok on a N/A but turbo? Doesn't sound too thought out.

guys,

if it wasnt safe do you think it would be on there??

i have used the revcut and bstcut on every rotor i have even setup and on my own personal car with no problems at all, every rotor workshop in australia uses the revcut and bstcut.

i have hit the boost cut with 20+psi boost and over 8500rpm and no problems at all, my rev limit is 8700rpm and i hit it all the time and never hurt a motor.

So you gonna rebuild mine when I hit the boost cut? lol :D

Please explain how. If your at 20+ psi and fuel is cut how is it possible not to detinate? I'm not trying to be an ass, but your statements seem to contradict everthing I've been told about forced induction rotary.

As a side note you may very well be right but I'm not sure it's a good idea to talk in these terms with as many new to standalone people we have on this board. It sounds like a recipe for a few blown motors.

10sec rx7 10-27-03 12:47 AM

there is a difference between leaning out and cutting all fuel, with no fuel there is no bang, no bang no detonation.

as long as all fuel is cut then you will be fine, as i have said i have been using these for years with out any problems at all, on all types of motors!

Dale was those "ALL fuel cut" feel like?

does it feel like some one had switch off the ignition key
and car turned off till you let off the gas ?

This happend to me at the track last time out

TonyTurboII 10-27-03 10:32 AM

I dont see a problem either, as long as all fuel is being cut. If theres no fuel, than there is NO chance for detonation.

LT8TurboII 10-27-03 02:46 PM

How can an engine with no fuel in it blow up? Spontaneous combustion? A total fuel cut is totally safe, I used the input cut on my clutch switch and cut with that, I also have my rev limiter and boostcut enabled, no problems.

I bounce the car off the clutch cut all the time too, its fun!

you will know when you have hit it, the engine stops for a split second, then starts again, followed by plooms of black smoke.

it dosent feel like the ign key was turned off,

Thanks Dale

That makes sense. I appreciate the educated and quick response. I'm trying to learn as much as I can, and I'm sure you can understand why my newbie brain would have considered fuel cut under boost a bad thing.

HIMNI Racing 10-28-03 05:53 PM

Ok, I'm trying the set it but, like everything else on the MT, it's in Hg, etc.

I'm a full out, stakes, ribs and burgers, or the grill, USA kinda guy. I don't speak in Celsius, Hg etc. I can convert Celsius to Fahrenheit but have no clue about hg to psi.

How many hg in a psi? Going out on a limb here but, this there any way to change the MT to stakes and ribs, without sending it back? Hell, even bar would be fine.

LT8TurboII 10-28-03 06:12 PM

mmHG is "steaks and ribs" enough to be what Autometer puts on their gauges. What exactly are you trying to set? The boost side of all of the settings is PSI.

Daniel

10sec rx7 10-28-03 06:42 PM

if it is still reading HG it is not in boost yet, all the boost maps are in psi!

Dale

I forsee a programmed fuel cut at -10mmhg and the car never idling again.

LOL I forsee you never having any other view of my car, other then from the rear. ;)

HIMNI Racing 10-29-03 05:57 PM

Opps, I was setting up the dash boost warning light. I set the boost cut with no probs. Sorry

When I go through the diff. warning light points, it only gives me #'s in Hg (vac) like on my boost gauge. (inch hg) It goes from 28 down to off & never goes into psi. That's why I asked what hg ment cuz I would think a boost warning light would be for boost only & not vac.

Maybe when I whent to the set up screen (31) and got to dash boost, I may of only whent down into vac and not up into psi. Is that possible? Though, I still don't understand why vac would even be there.

Ill help you anylize the clouds of smoke coming from your tail pipes. Other than that I might be able to make out your vehicle if I squint when I look in my rear view. :D

HIMNI Racing 10-31-03 02:48 AM

Got it! Just go up when setting it. It will change from hg to psi.

Tony, you just bring that RE as I will simply spank it :)

TonyTurboII 10-31-03 11:32 AM

Give me a few days to tune the NOS timing and ill run 9's. Think you can hang with that? lol

LT8TurboII 10-31-03 12:39 PM

9's....in the 1/8 mile mabey......

;)

Daniel

HIMNI Racing 10-31-03 11:34 PM

9 what.............minuets? ( all in good fun) I have to pick. :)

A similar question... is fuel cut safe on a premix car? if fuel is all that is lubbing those apex seals...seems like it might not be the best idea to cut it completly

Crusader_9x 11-08-03 05:13 PM

its only cut for a split second. so there should be plently in there to continue to lub everything till u decide to let off the gas.
