any HOWTO's for microtech/FC install?
i've been looking around and found several HOWTO's for other engine management systems (especially haltech) but havent come across any for the microtech. could someone direct me to one or two howto's?

just follow the wire diagram
one wire by one, i guess is not that hard |
Measure twice cut once.
Solder all connections. It's really not all that bad. If you've ever taken off the UIM/TB before, it'll be a cinch. |
I wired mine in yesterday, it's not bad at all. If you can wire in an aftermarket stereo, then you can do this. The directions are clear and the wiring diagrams are very good. I had to refer to the FSM for some wire colors a couple of times, but all in all, it was very simple. It fired up on the first turn of the key and idled rock solid at 820, with no adjustments on the base map. :D

Who wired the COIL packs Jim?  and CAS??

That's because you said you had no idea how to do it.
I sure hope you don't go around telling people YOU tuned your car as well ;) ;) |
Not true. The wiring I can do, the tuning, however, I could not.
*EVERONE PLEASE READ* Mike Goebel, aka Prianha, tuned my car with his wideband, I did not tune it. He did an outstanding job and my car now runs better than ever. |
Thats good to hear! jimmyv13 & Piranha
I got my car tunned last week and she is FAST as Hell! at only 10PSI Once I fix some cooling/Headlight rewiring/Heavier Duty Clutch I'm taking to the Dyno @ 12-13PSI and see what she is laying down I try to get a Vid of me boosting @ 10PSI |

Jim's car was pig rich, so rich that when the secondaries came on they just flooded the car to stuttering. It must have been from his 680s. We drove around for 2-3 hours with me on the laptop and him driving and got the car running pretty damn good. He was able to keep up with a 90s something Trans Am from behind with a blown turbo at about 6-8 psi with no boost controller, and all I did was change a bit of timing and tune the fuel maps. :) |
I was very surprised that I could keep up with the TA with only 8 PSI. I didn't want to run him, but Mike said, "you'll never know until you try" I'm sure he thought he could just smoke me 'cause I was an import and he had a big V8  I would've loved to see his face when he punched it and I was still right there in his rearview all the way through 2nd and into the 3rd.
My turbo is not well, it doesn't spin very fast when I'm idling. Mark'smazda noticed his turbo doing the same thing when he went standalone. I wonder how many turbos are in this condition, but you'll never know until you go standalone and run w/o the AFM. Or, I guess, those ppl that install the AFM after the turbo will be able to see, but that is not a very common mod over here in the states. Thanks again, Mike. :) |
Just wondering, does your car feel faster just from getting rid of the AFM Jim? I know everyone says you gain like 20+rwhp just from ditching it, so I figure your "butt-dyno" would be able to tell.

Well, that is a big restriction, but I don't honestly know. I DO know, that my car is much faster with the tuning ability of the standalone. I just wonder how fast it'll be with a proper functioning turbo :-)
|
I don't think dropping the AFM adds 20 HP. It didn't feel that way to me. 20 HP is a significant increase. Maybe 5-10.
|
I put the AFM on my and drove up and down my street. I didn't really notice much difference except in the high RPM ranges. I don't know about 20rwhp gain, with my mods, maybe if you had an upgraded turbo, and IC setup I could see 20hp.

I was planning on driving it around on the base map for the first 1k miles and staying off the boost. I have 720 secondaries but I don't want to get it tuned until the motor is broken in. |
It has to do with RPM and pressure, but yeah, if you stay out of boost you'll be fine. The main reason is just to take it easy on the engine.
|
So how long does the install take approximately? How many wires do you need to hook up/cut? I was going to have my local shop do the install for $500 but it sounds pretty easy. Only thing I don't like taking the UIM off for is because of the different vac lines. The ones on the back are pretty hard to get to sometimes.
|
Well, it depends on how good you are at reading diagrams and soldering wires together. While I don't have any of the normal vac lines on my UIM, taking it off is easy compared to rewiring your engine :)
