worth it to convert to crank trigger
my s4 t2 will be going through with the ms1 to ms2 upgrade. I saw this on the forum recently and it caught my eye. FC RX-7 Crank Trigger Kits
Is this crank trigger something I should do now before I get my car tuned or could I do it later with no effect on the tune? Anyone use this guys kit yet? |
First, a lot of people are using the stock CAS successfully.
However, there are measurable differences in switching to a higher tooth count (better resolution) trigger that is driven directly from the crank pulley (no slop from gear drive) While some would say its not necessary, I think that if you've gone to the trouble of setting up a standalone engine management system, why would you not want the best trigger. As far as it changing the tune if you switch to it later, the only real difference would likely be in the settings (trigger type, tooth count, trigger offset, etc.). As far as the timing map, it should remain the same. The kit you linked to is made by Full Function Engineering (FFE). And like all of their products, is top notch. I set one up on my friends Haltech equipped FD. |

The different kits available from FFE are VR (like like sensors in the stock CAS) and Hall Effect senor (uses 3 wires and requires a difference circuit on the MS). I was having issues with picking up noise with the stock CAS. Switching to the FFE made a noticeable difference in idle quality and completely eliminated my noise issues. It's well-made and looks nice. The only thing I don't like about crank trigger versus CAS is setting the base timing. Instead of being able to turn the CAS and use a timing light, you have to make a small change to your first tooth offset, recheck timing, repeat. A small complaint, but no one ever mentions it. I don't know much about tuning, but I asked the seller about using it for megasquirt. He said he had 2 types, I guess the difference was the amount of teeth. Can I use this on my ms2? If I can, does it matter how many teeth there are?

they both works but get the 36-1I believe that ken says that give you better resolution.

I think I remember Ken telling me if you go with the RX-8 wheel you have other limitations. |
One thing about the FFE trigger, which may or may not be an issue for your setup, is that the bracket occupies the same spot at the mounts for the A/C and power steering. So you can't run those without modifying the trigger pickup mounts.
