Renesis MS2/kdFi ignition problem
 

Hi,

We're making a miata with a 6port Renesis engine for circuit racing..

I mounted a 12A front cover and timing gear on it (rx8 gear spins backwards), I am using a TII CAS and made a LM1815 circuit for the 2 tooth wheel, if I spin the CAS by blowing compressed air on the gear it reads up fine till 2000rpm or so.

I put 2 yellow injectors as primaries and paired 2 red (in the primary ports) with 2 yellow (in the sec ports) as 2ndary group (which I can only open after 3750 rpm due the SSV).. fuel pressure is 4bar and I'm using a Bosch 044 pump.

It is running a 75mm BBK Mustang throttle body with tps, the engine is going to be controlled using alpha-N and the APV, SSV and VDI will be used.
atm I have the engine outside the car so it's easy to reach the plugs etc

I entered the triggerwheel setting as specified here and FD mode is on and also RX-8 mode I put on as I am using 4 LS-2 coils..

the front leading coil is connected to Ing_A, front trailing to Ing_B. Rear trailing to Ing_C and rear leading to Ing_D.

When cranking I see around 150rpm in megatune.. but when I remowe a sprakplug cable and see if it fires it seems it is only firing half the amount as it should.. also rear leading (Ing_D) isn't firing

It fires now and then, but doesn't start, I tried alot playing with the timing and fueling but it doesn't want to start up.. I think the fueling is quite good as when I started for a few seconds and I remove the CAS when I turn the cas by hand it even fires.

the ECU is a kdFi which is basicly a MS2 with some equipment built onto the board

When I am on my laptop I will post some pics of the engine and screens of megatune, I'm really a bit in the dark about what I should do now..

It's alive!!

after alot of playing with the trigger/ign option it just fired up, idles nice and smoothly at 900rpm, now waiting for package from racingbeat with counterwieght and clutch and then I pop the engine in the car

So for those who want to run a COP setup with FC CAS you need to use settings as here below..

Those are the same settings you need to run for any rotary with a 2nd gen CAS or the 3rd gen setup.

Hi, I'm looking at fitting a Renesis into an FC,how are you planning to control the 6 port DC motor?

Thats actually quite easy,

there is a sensor inside, when you go to the closed position it gives 1.5)2v, so use a trigger that cuts the power to the motor in the clsing direction ..

in the open position there's no sensor, thats why I used a .5 Ohm series resistor, when the currect exceeds 1A the power is cut..

Do you know where I can find the pinouts of the 6 port motor?

the 2 bootm ones are the motor, then you have the 3 upper ones, one is 5v, one groudn and one signal, brown is GND and IIRC red-white is +5v

Are you using the KDFi to control the 6 port motor?

yep..

there are quite little programmable outputs but I think I find 3, which is all I need..

I finished today the Al bar between the transmissions and the differential, which is a pain as the support on the rx8 6speed is at the wrong side, also there's no room at all for the exh manifold, which will be a pain also..

I had to ditch the 12A frontcover and go back to rx8 hardware because there was no room for the oilpan..

In the pic of your ecu setup, what is the small trailing pcb for?
Have you had to modify the KDFi much to run the rotary?

iet's a lm1815 to convert the 2ndary VR sensor signal (2tooth) into a pulse signal, but I'll have to remove it again as now I will be using the 36-2-2 rx-8 triggerwheel..

So if I were to buy a KDfi 1.3, would it run the renesis with no modifications using the renesis trigger wheel?

here is a video, idles smooth.. I managed to kill the usb communication on the kdfi probaly because I forget to connect the injector ground point :/

congratulations on figuring it all out. it looks like a cool little car. i'd like to see more of it.

had so put on old school alternator rx-8 on doesn't like old school wiring with a bulb

Little update:

engine is in the car and exh is also finished, with the stock RX-8 rear muffler it extremely silint, which is good as we're only allowed to produce 95 dB

it's still not completely mapped but this will happen somewhere next week..

what is also surprising is that it seems to idle better with around ign timing around 10° after TDC and no split, if I use 10° BTDC and with 0°split it misfires every 5-10 seconds at idle (600-800rpm)

Also I remade the controllor for the aux-ports DC engined actuator, which is now made with relays as power swithces, and working very good as it should =)

All the rotaries I've tuned like about 5 ATDC and a little split but I've not tried to tune a renesis.

I also hooked up the factory rx8 knock sensor, when I give it some throttle the knock led isd ilumination now and then, but it seems quite impossible to me that it would knock when giving it some throttle witout load.. altough the map at the higher rpm/load is still totally off

I have seen knock on my S4 doing quick blips off idle when the upper left corner of the ignition table had too much timing.
