ign1a coils possible with 36-1 wheel?

Well it's time to upgrade ignition. I have a stock fc setup and plan to raise the boost. I have been researching the cop idea. It says in the manual that you need to have a cam signal. I only have the full function engineering 36-1 wheel. Will that work to run it in the rx8 + fd mode? Also, would I need to change the already 4.7k ohm resistore to pull up on the 5v proto area as opposed to the way its a already running for the fc coils? The manual says to put the resistor from transistor to 5v. BTW this on an ms2 version 3.0 something, I don't have the info around me. Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, it will work with a 36-1 wheel. You don't need a 2nd (cam) sensor if your main trigger wheel has a missing tooth. 4-stroke engines need it though, which is why it's in the manual. In the software you need to set number of coils to 'coil on plug' and at rotary settings you need to select rotary on, FD output mode, and RX-8 mode on. Wire the coils like this:

Spk A Front Leading coil (LED14)
Spk B Front trailing coil (LED16)
Spk C Rear trailing coil (LED15)
Spk D Rear Leading coil (JS11)

As for the pullup resistors, the 4.7K value is wrong, the IGN-1A coils need more pullup, DIYautotune reccommends 270 to 330 ohm's, so switch those resistors out.

Thanks! Now do I wire the resistors to the 5volt proto area and pin 3 on the transistor? What is the best wiring diagram or documentation to use?

jsnow82 01-19-14 07:11 PM

The reason I'm asking about the way the resistors are wired is because I have it set up as stated in Aaron cakes writeup. Am I changing that and just wiring them how they show on the logic level output wiring diagram in the manual?

The 3 LED spark outputs (A,C,B) you just do as per normal like in Aaroncake's writeup, but of course with the 270 to 330 ohm resistors instead of 4.7k. I'm using 300ohm pullups with my ign-1a's.

For the 4th output, build the circuit as outlined in the logic level output part of the msextra spark output documentation but with the 270-300R resistor instead of 4.7k

Sweet! Thank you two for the fast reaponses. That's what I needed. How about software? I already have it running with 36-1 wheel. So I simply change it to rx8 + fd and it'll run?

elturbonitroso 01-19-14 07:30 PM

if you use the latest firmware would be fd and cop

.::evil inside::. 01-20-14 06:35 AM

Yep, you shouldn't need to change trigger settings. As elturbonitroso said, the latest firmware has ditched the title "rx8 mode". You just set Rotary mode to FD and select Coil on plug in the ignition settings.

Are you having ignition problems with the FC setup?

I've never seen any issues with the FC coils, even at high power levels. Though on my own RX-7 I run a Crane CDI box on the leading coil, I've tuned loads at varying boost levels (from 8 - 18 PSI) running issue free on the stock FC coils.

jsnow82 01-20-14 07:37 PM

@Aaron
I'm planning on bumping the boost in the 23-25 psi range with water injection and want to light the fire.

So I received all the parts to start and finish the cop setup. What did you guys do about a tach signal?

Jose

Aaron Cake 01-24-14 10:22 AM

Follow the MSExtra hardware instructions to add a tach output to the V3 board.

jsnow82 01-24-14 11:36 AM

There are 4 options. That's why I'm asking. Which circuit with what resistor works with the fc tachometer?

Thank you,
Jose

elturbonitroso 01-24-14 05:07 PM

the hi output tach the one with the relay.

Aaron Cake 01-25-14 10:28 AM

Use the high voltaqe tach circuit. Very clever use of a relay coil. The low voltage may work but it will likely drop out at lower RPMs.

.::evil inside::. 01-25-14 08:14 PM

That is something I hadn't gotten around to yet. Is it the same story for an aftermarket tach?
I'm using one of these

Aaron Cake 01-26-14 09:40 AM

Depends on the aftermarket tach. Older designs which are meant to trigger from the coil may not work with the lower power driver. Newer designs will probably be fine driven by a 12V signal.

jsnow82 01-30-14 01:34 PM

Where do you guys mount the relay, inside the ecu or outside of it? Also do you pick up 12v from inside the ecu or outside?

Thank you
Jose

jsnow82 02-02-14 07:57 AM

So im mounting the relay on top of the case and making connections from there.

I have a question on the software side of things. I have version 3.1.0. For the coils dwell and duration, can I set max dwell to 4.5ms and max spark duration to 2.9ms? Im guessing that allows to coil to always operate under those conditins, can someone correct me on this please?

Also with my current firmware,under the rotary settings I have FD mode and Rx8 mode enabled but under ignition options I also have COP enabled. Is this the correct way? Or do I just enable RX8 mode with COP?

This seems to be my last few questions until I try to start the car.

Thank You,
Jose Nieves

When using ign1a coils, does spark output remain as "going low" as it has been for stock coils?

edit: looking back at the diagram and referencing it to the msextra tuning manual, I think I just answered my own question. Going low.

elturbonitroso 02-09-14 11:52 AM

you have to change them to inverted

jsnow82 02-09-14 01:05 PM

So i got the car running. The coils were getting extremely hot to the touch and that was with the spark going high. When going low the leds would just stay on. What is the problem? There really shouldnt be a reason for them getting hot. When grounding the coil, do you put the logic grounds to a serperate ground and what guage wire? How about the other 3 grounds? What gauge wire and where do you ground them to? Im hoping that I didnt fry the coils. The car still runs with them.

Elturbonitroso, are suggesting that he change his jumper to inverted or that he put his setting to going high? What do you have your jumper set up as? If using vroutinv, I can see why you would set it as going high, but considering the jumper is soldered to vrout, then it would have to be going low. I read a similar thread on the msextra forum and a few individuals suggested going high until he stated what his jumper wire was set to - vrout instead of vroutinv. I think this is where all the confusion came in. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

See the 6th post in the msextra thread, he has TSEL routed to VROUT: http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewto...?f=101&t=52600
