Continuous trigger of leading coil
 

I seem to have a problem where my leading coils are being triggered continuously. At first I thought I had a problem with noise on the leading coil trigger lead going into the igniter so I rerouted it away from everything that could have been inducing the noise without any change. I have an MSD 6 installed and as soon as I turn on the ignition it starts firing and continues as long as I leave the ignition on.

To start troubleshooting I disconnected the CAS leads going into the MS2 to make sure there wasn't something feeding in on those leads even though they are shielded. No change. I do have the DIY relay board between the engine and the MS2. I have double checked the wiring of the MSD 6, I even dropped in a stock coil and igniter and took out the MSD 6 and still see the same thing.

Any thoughts on where I should start looking?

Does software see RPM?

To be honest I am not sure when it started but I suspect it may have started when I moved the relay board into the passenge compartment and added connectors between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment. By the way this is an SCCA Prepared car so the wiring harness us totally custom. After I moved the relay board I toned out all of the wires from end to end just to make sure I had everything straight. I was starting my tuning but had a break when my O2 controller failed and I had to wait for it to be repaired. So I just got back to working on the car.

I will try to reflash this evening and see if that does any good, I never thought to try that.

I don't know if it might help any but try changing out the transistor behind D14on the V3 mainboard. I think it's a 2N2222 or a 2N3904 NPN transistor. When I was having problems with my leading trigger I found that to be my problem.

Thanks, I think I even have a couple of those on hand. If not they are common enough that Radio Shack should have one or the other. Worst case there are a couple of good electronics supply shops not to far away.

You may also want to try bypassing the MSD unit and using a stock leading ignition ignitor/coil just to rule the MSD or the wiring to it out.

I already tried that. It was in fact the first thing I tried. Plugged a spare ingitor and coil back in and saw similar issue, just not as hot of a spark.

Actually radio shack is where I got mine for about $2 for a whole pack of NPN transistors, 2N2222 and 2N3904 included. Let us know how it goes and hope it works out.

Your price was almost dead on. I went with the 2n2222's as their current rating on the package was higher than the 2n3904's. I will let you know if that in fact proves to be the problem. To be honest I am suspecting I have had this problem longer than I knew about it.

You may have hit the problem. I will know tomorrow if that is the only problem but the transistor had a short base to collector. I should finally have time to get it replaced tomorrow. I'll post the results after I get it done and tested.
