My FD vs 96 ish Cobra

It happened a few nights ago on my way home on I-75. I was doing my usual cruising on the middle line doing about 75mph, the usual, when I saw this white Mustang Cobra cruising on the fast lane.
We cruised on our normal speed not really paying attention to one or the other, then when I had to made a lane change for slower traffic, and now I am on the fast lane with the Cobra on my right. We were side by side for a mile or two, and I really thought he didn't want to play, and I wasn't going to initiate the move. This was when he launched forward a few feet a couple times, and I immediate know he wanted to race.
We were doing about 75 when I downshifted to 4th, when I should be in 3rd. We both got on it the same time, and I immediately started to pull ahead about 1/2 car and slowly to about 2 CL and when I slowed down, I was at the top of my 4th gear. I didnt expect the stang to be that close of a race as I know what they can do stock. We went our seperate way, but again, I thought it was a good race, and the cobra was no where near stock. Any insights or comments?

I was pushing about 14 psi on stock seq. twins, about 350rwhp.

Thanks for reading.

Good kill! Vids?

A 96 Cobra would be 305 hp/300 ft-lbs, so it isn't a huge slouch, though it wouldn't keep up in too well stock form. I doubt he would spray on a highway roll, but that is possible I suppose. I would hope that if he was boosted he would have pulled right by you. I'd guess just exhaust and intake, and maybe headers (they are pita on those cars). Heads and cams would be quite a bit more money but he could have done those too.

I think it's hard to say because it sounded like he performed somewhere between the basic bolt on car and the boosted/sprayed car. I don't generally see people do cams on those cars but maybe he did?

Why not? I would expect him to use it if he had it.

:Wconfused My buddy has a built 2000 Gt w/ a procharger @ 10 lbs of boost. He put down 438 whp and I consistently beat him by a car from 60 to 130. Why would one roll right by him?

Yeah I have seen a few cobras even 03-04 cobras gettin hurt by cars I never thought woulda passed em. Granted those cars aren't known for higher speeds then what 150-160. I still say good kill even though it was an older cobra.

A friend of mine had a 2000 GT as well that he had built up. Prolly dropped about 15-20k into the motor. Still got his ass handed to him constantly due to the fact he couldn't hook up at all. Always called him a dumbass for not putting money into the rear end or good tires and what not.

I would not be supprised if he was boosted or sprayed. Plus they are a bit on the heavy side, around 3500 lbs? I raced an E46 M3 with 150shot of nitrous and gutted interiors and everything, and pulled about 2CL on me when I was only about 320rwhp and he was pushing about 430ish rwhp and about 3100 lb.

I doubt he has only basic bolt-ons. These cars only trap about 102mph stock, and probably 110-114 trap sprayed. If he is boosted, he probably traps 116 ish. I trap about 116 on my setup, so I doubt he would roll by me on a highway pull. But anything is possible. These are just pure speculations.

Yikes... goin' about 140 mph or so? :fingersx: Just kidding :) I ran into a stock one a while back. Not a fan. The more recent Cobras... different story.

Good race, get video next time and gear down when they want to play!

DOHC vs SOHC, the Cobra has a 32V 4.6l, while the regular GT's have a 16V. I'd guess that a Cobra with a procharger would put down a bit more power than that, although I could be wrong. The TQ curve would probably look a bit different also. However you may have a point.

I was doubting he was spraying because most people don't run around with an open bottle. If he had a remote bottle opener then fair game, but I doubt he expected to race so I was thinking he probably wouldn't be ready to spray on a highway run.

I agree he definitely had more than basic bolt-ons. He may have had a weaker supercharger also, so I guess that is possible. Usually you can hear it especially if it was a Kenne-Bell, and even a centri blower you can usually hear from the bov (if the kit has one), though that would depend on how loud the cars were.

Nice kill. I was in the Atlantic station area the other day and there was a Roush Stage 3 New Mustang. I wanted to play just to see what it had, but the retiree did not want to. Down here in Homestead, FL there is what is fabled as a very well built New Cobra. I saw him a couple of times, but I was never in my car. Also would like to give him a run.

On I-285 I usually get Charger R/Ts and the likes trying to play, what a waste of gas. Way to hold it down in the Atl.

Oh yeah, who drive around by themselves with a video camera? How are "normal" people expected to always have videos of random traffic incidents? I guess once I get a race camera installed in my car I can start filming these things.
