mod'ed 87 T2 vs C5 vette

I dont know what year, they all look the same from 85-98, but it was an automatic.

I was on the way to work this morning, stopped at a red and this blue vette comes speeding up to the light and stops quick. He keeps edging the line while we are waitng for the green.

So the light turns green and I get a quick roll off the line, and once he gets even with me, I get on it pretty good. He jams on it as well. About half way through third, I had him beat and he backed off.

I talked to him at the next light and he asked "what kinda car is that?" He looked shocked when I said Mazda. He said "that thing is damn fast", then mentioned that he didnt know we were racing... :Wconfused. So I agreed to follow him to another light.

We found a light turning yellow and pulled up the the line. Once the cross traffic light tuned yellow, I rev'ed up to like 3500-4k and launched on the green. It was pretty even through first. My rear end was slipping around a bit, I shifted in to second and the tires kept burning. I hooked about half way through second and started to pull on him. I had about a half length on him.

Going into third slipped and went to 5th!!!!!!!! :wallbash: :wallbash: and we both let off. And he slowed to tell me he heard the slip. He asked what all I had, but didnt have time to go into all that. He said again that the car was real fast and said it looked like I had him going into 3rd.

We both acknoledged a great launch by both cars and went our separate ways.

I raced a couple vettes in my white stock T2 and always lost terribly. This was the first vette I raced in my black 7 and it I was pretty impressed with the cars abilities. Now I just gotta handle my nerves a little better (espcially when coming outta 2nd:) )

Nice race. Next time make that shift a little smoother. Are there any good places to meet up with fellow 7 owners in phoenix? I haven't seen anything on the West section of the forum.

stylEmon 01-02-08 11:57 AM

we stay outta the west section because it's mostly controlled by CA folks.

there are a few places around town:

The Pavillions at the 101 and Indian Bend [Sat]
83rd Ave and Beardsly [Sat]
Greenway and 35th Ave [Fri]
Bell and 43rd [Fri and Sat]

There are a couple runs through a local RX site... lemme see...

http://www.rccaz.com there it is.

C5's were made from 97-04'. The 97-00' Automatics had 345hp and 350 tq I believe, while the 01's had 350hp and 360tq. The 01'-04' 6spds had 350hp and 375tq. Also on the automatics, you had a choice of 2.73 gears, or 3.15 'performance' gears while all the 6spds had 3.42's. 84-96 were called C4's and had anywhere from 205hp to 385hp depending year, transmission, option, etc. The weight on C4's I believe also hovers around 3300-3400lbs, and the C5's got into the low to mid 3200's(Z06 came in at 31xx).

Hope that helps with figuring out what you were racing against. :icon_tup:

LOL @ saying all vettes look the same from 85-98

Good race, back in the days I used to love the close runs with C5s in my modded TurboII and stock FD. And thanks for the great info JustinStrife.

No problem. There's alot of things I don't know about different cars, but the ones I'm interested in, I'm always trying to read up about. So if I can clear up any mis-information, or maybe give someone an idea about another car's specs, I'm happy to do it. That way some people will have a better idea of what they're going up against, and whether or not they have a shot at beating it. :lol2::icon_tup:

stylEmon 01-02-08 11:26 PM

That doesnt really help... they still look the same no matter what the numbers say...

I'd say it was possibly a 95. was auto and hard top and blue. I am usually good at gauging the year a car was made, but those things barely changed in 15 years...

I think the vettes changed less in the 90's than the fox body mustangs.

I'm just saying, it's an observation.. that's all.

I should've asked him what year, but I was justed stoked to beat a vette finally

84-90 C4 Corvette style.. 205-250hp

91-96 C4 Corvette style.. 300-385hp

97-04 C5 Corvette style.. 345-405hp

The 80's C4 had an almost indented rear end. If you compare it to the 90's C4, you'll see the 90's one is rounded in the back like so.. ( The 80's is more like this.. >

The C5 is a bit bigger, and has a wide and big butt as corvette guys say with either affection or hatred. :lol2:

Once you notice the difference here, you can't mistaken them again. :icon_tup:

Notice the sharper cut lines and the exposed headlights. The C6 is also 5" shorter and 1" narrower in width.

stylEmon 01-03-08 11:41 AM

it was a C4 with the rounded tail lights...

http://www.stainlessworks.net/cart/i...%20website.jpg

so somewhere in the 300 - 400 hp range... that's a big range!

JustinStrife 01-03-08 11:51 AM

Weird I just noticed. Someone changed the picture(maybe the server I'm linked from) to a C6 from a C5. o.0

There's no way I could mistake a C5 from a C6. I've owned 2 C5's!

The only thing I can tell you about the car you raced, is if it's automatic, it has no more than 300hp. The 6spds in the last years of the C4 had 330hp. The 385hp version is called the ZR-1 and has squared tail lights and a wider rear end.

^^ Sexy :D I really like the look of the C6s from that angle. I like the look of the C5s from the back ;) I still feel like GM copped a bit on the FD's styling on the C5. Thanks for the 'vette info too.

To the OP, nice work, watch those shifts next time, I've screwed up one here and there too :)

ANOTHER POINT FOR ME!!

Where were you in the other thread where everyone disagreed on that??

:rlaugh:

stylEmon 01-03-08 04:18 PM

I may have to pay for my nice kill...

I noticed this morning that my ground wire on my engine came out of the terminal!!!

I am pretty sure it's becasue of old shotty motor mounts. I am supposed to have some new ones in the making right now...

Also, I am pretty sure my turbo oil seal is shot. I noticed it was going bad a while back (after a 20 psi run on my stock turbo). It started leaking then. I controlled the boost back down to 10 psi and havent really got on it too much.

But this time, vs the vette, I romped on it. Bye Bye Turbo

Torque South 01-03-08 05:33 PM

Yeah I think after 15 psi you're REALLY pushing it on the stock turbo. And here's some more C6 pics and stats:

AcidAngel7477 01-03-08 09:17 PM

^^word..i wouldent push the stock turbo past 10.

:AA:

stylEmon 01-03-08 11:17 PM

i know, i know.... i had a custom exhaust with only one muffer. It pushed the boost up pretty high, so I backed off and added another muffler. But I went out tuning with the one muffler set up and saw how much the turbo could handle. Now I know for sure what the stock turbo can handle.

bennyess 01-15-08 04:55 AM

my mates got a 91 t2 with fmic built motor etc with a hi flowed stock turbo and made 320whp on 18psi only tuned to 6k rpm, he ran a 12.4 et

stylEmon 01-15-08 10:52 AM

sounds like he should
a] tune the rest of the RPM range

b] upgrade the turbo

At 18 psi the stock turbo is not producing any more power. Probably not making any more after about 12-14 psi...

Good job on the 320hp on stock turbo !!
