Saving a 1993 RX-7

Hello Everyone,
First time to rotary engines.
Got this 93 FD about a year ago in a poor working condition with no known history. It had been sitting around for a few years at garage. (Barn find I guess)
Engine was running really rough and over heat, my best guess a water seal had gone bad and with 100,000 miles on the on the dash it was due for a rebuild.
Of course there was always consideration and pressure to LS. I went against that and sent the engine off to Chips Motorsports. Expensive? Yes Worth the value? 110%, the engine looks so good I don't want to put it back in the car.

The plan was always to keep the twin turbo setup, however after careful checking the stock turbo manifold has cracks. (common problem)
Instead of risking issues, now the plan is to go single turbo setup.

Hello and welcome!
keeping the twins is nice, but the simplicity of running a single setup is so nice.
no more rats nest of vac lines/solenoid packs/vac manifolds.

based off your gauge cluster, are you running a haltech elite ecu set up?
what are your plans for the cars power goals, fuel system?

beautiful chassis, looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Leaning towards turbosource for a single turbo kit. They seem to have the most comprehensive kit.

or
https://turbosource.com/products/ser...fd3s-400hp-kit

The haltech is just the street pack, as the factory dash cluster is not work, and the cost to fix or replace just doesn't add up. Still going to run the PFC.
Fuel system, planning to replace everything, not planning on e85 as there is not much around.
Power goals don't really matter to me as I want to make the car more simple to keep and maintain.

Good to see another FD in MI. I have been looking into a single conversion and narrowed it down to likely the Turblown kit.

my car is currently running an older A-spec tuning garrett gt40 kit, and A-spec front mount set up.
its nice with the external wastegate being routed back into the downpipe as well.

fuel system should look at upgrading all the feed/return lines. pretty much build it to the point it could handle E85 and you will never have to tinker with it again.
best to be over built in fuel system and not need it, than run into a fuel starvation issue.

i would also look into a meth kit if you are staying on pump, just to keep temp/detonation tendency's down.

looking forward to the build.
ill be posting my own "introduction post" here soon.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about our turbo kits.

what kind of front dash unit is that!

Haltech Street dash

Well its been a while and the engine is in the car. Been doing everything on my own, chipping away at it slowly.
Turns out the stock manifold for the twins had some small cracks so it was straight to a single option.
Ended up with a Turblown 7670 EFR IWG kit. Installing was easy however the sequence is important, otherwise access to some bolts and fittings will be difficult.
Final fitment and clearances is quite good with the exception of the hard heater line. (No where to hard mount it to.)
Then everything else was done to simplify and increase reliability. (I know shouldn't use reliability. with rotary)
All emissions gear deleted, throttle body mod, twin oil coolers, radiator and front mount intercooler.
Additionally with the cars age the fuel system was questionable, taking no risks the fuel system was upgraded to a CJ Motorsports FD RX7 Fuel System with Id1000 and Id2000. (Pump to be changed at a later date)
The harness was another risky item, being +25years old almost every connector was broken, damaged insulation and frayed wires. To avoid any potential headaches, a mil-spec rywire was the best option.

Since this is the first time I've own a rotary, I have no idea how its suppose to run. Its also the first time to tuning, so the only thing I've changed in the ecu was the injectors.

Could I get some feedback? Is this how a rotary suppose to run and sound?
This is what the current setting look like. Also the PFC seem to read the RPM higher than the boost controller...about 500rpm higher....

Welcome!! That's a beautiful FD sir!! Thank s for updating us on your progress. I would recommend starting a proper build thread in the 3rd gen section. The thread there will get more responses and feedback and we like to keep this section for intros. Hope to see more progress on the car!

Love the way that clean motor looks in the car. are these cars known for fuel system issues?

Thanks,

Joe

Nice progress. That looks like a Chip Motorsports built engine. Did Chip build it?
