RX7 Calgary
 

hello all, been too busy reading up to introduce myself. just picked up a red 87 na rx7. needs a bit of work (mostly body / interior) but im loving it so far! anyone have experience / feedback with local rotary shops here? thanks to all!

Welcome to RX-7's. There's only one rotary shop in Calgary called "RX-7 Specialties". I use the term "specialties" loosely. Search if you want to read feedback. One RX-7 I bought a few years ago had an "rebuilt" engine from rx7 specialties. I bought the car for the body, since it was rust free so I thought why not, even though I had heard from locals the problems they've had. The engine blew within a year with only 20,000km and I ended up swaping in an engine a friend had done for me that I had used for over 5 years. I sold that car a while ago, but it's still running strong on my old engine.

Some other locals say the quality has improved, but I know for a fact they can't tune an engine and have sold rebuilds with missing parts. Oh and they proudly advertise a $450.00 hot air intake on their website. Hilarious. Many of the experienced rotor-heads around here believe rx-7 specialties single-handedly killed the rotary scene in Calgary and I don't disagree.

a "hot air intake"?! well thats good to know about them, hadnt gotten that far in my reading yet. just so damn much to absorb on this forum but im getting there! just looking at a parts car with a rebuilt "rx7 specialities" engine that is now dead or wont start anyways so ill be wary. thanks.
the guy i bought the car from recommended dealing with a guy by the name of max travers (not sure of business name if there is one) based out of high river i believe. anyone worked with this guy before? i might give him a try and see how it goes. will keep everyone posted. thanks for the feedback!

Max is around Priddis I believe, but I could be wrong :). Officially he's the Canadian branch of KKM tuning out of Japan. Apparently he actually studied rotary tuning in Japan. I've talked to him a bit about doing some tuning on his dyno, but I had to put my project on hold so I didn't get there yet. A few of my friends have done business with him and say he's the man. He and his friends have some of the highest hp second gens in Calgary, and they've been driving around for years. I've read a lot of his posts and there's not doubt he knows what he's doing.

Yeah, as for the intake, rx-7 (non)specialties advertise it as a "cold air intake", but it's just a pipe, filter and a heat sheild. The hot air in the engine bay goes right around the heatshield. There's a lot of posts on this site on this kind of crappy intake and that in reality, you're better off with the stock plastic if you don't make a true boxed-in cold air intake. Heck, you can get a 15$ intake off ebay if you want aluminum pipe and a filter, lol.

hey thats great to know! thanks for the feedback... ill definitely give him a ring. will post up some pictures as soon as i get it back from the mechanic. getting safetied still... brakes and catback exhaust needed which is fine i guess since i was eventually doing it anyways. there actually seems to be quite a few decent parts cars in the area. thinkin of picking one up and striping it down. anything youre in need of flash? maybe as a little "thank you" for the recent advice!

ive been going to the rx7 specialist and they havent done me good at all , would love to find some one who knows what there really doing

Where exactly in calgary is the specialty shop? I live in Edmonton would be willing to go there if need be. But are they any good? Plus waiting still to get my rx-7

Adam at Rx7specialties has always treated me well. My engine has held up to a lot of abuse and still runs strong.....

Maxthe7man on this forum, but don't bother he avoids this shit hole like the plague. Every time he posts here it ends up in a fight because the dick bags with big post counts get their panties in a bunch when he disagrees and debunks the useless shit they spew.

Try Maxt over on www.beyond.ca you'll find he frequents there a lot more.

Max will flat out not deal with shit. His builds might take a little longer and he won't compromise on parts (not shitty used rotors or worn out housings) so it'll cost a bit more, but there is no one that can build a motor like him. He does in fact spend time in Japan every year building and tuning rotary's.

My hatred of Adam and RX-7 Specialties is well documented I'll leave it at that.
