Newbie with a Rotary in a Boat

Hello all, I have been reading and reading for about two years now and have decided to join. I apologize because I really don't have anything to offer to the group. Although if I figure out how to post pictures, most of you have never seen a 13b spraying a cloud of mud. At least not on purpose.I know this sounds crazy but a light weight powerhouse engine works best in shallow water. I mean shallow shallow water. A hand full of these boats were built here in South Louisiana equipped with a marinized 13b( for duck hunting mostly). I bought the boat not really understanding how special the engine was. Similar boats I have owned in the past were powered with 1984 Subaru's around 70 HP. This engine is about 175 hp and weighs a lot less. The engine looks to have a standard 1985 Ignition set up with two round coils. I know most would upgrade the Ignition but it runs very well. My question is what replacement or spare Coils should I buy. I do not want to fry anything. The two black round ones installed do not have information on them. The two coils only have positive and negative post no external resistors. The auto parts stores offer all kinds. Thanks Duckdough

What type coils would you buy with 1985 distributor with J109 Igniters and no visible resistors? Shouldn't the resistors be inline from the distributor to coil? Thanks for type and model info. Doug

That's really cool! I'd love to see a picture of how that looks on your boat!

The easiest way to post a picture is built in on this site. First, you need the pictures either on your computer or your phone, whichever you are posting from.
Then while you are making a new reply to a thread, or when you are making a new post, select the small "image" icon from the row of symbols above the text entry area. That should let you upload image files directly, makes it pretty easy.

Here's a quick guide.

welcome to the forum. the 85 ignition is electronic and doesn't use resistors. stock coils work just fine and in my experience have never had one go bad. as for aftermarket replacements, people usually use msd.

Thanks rxtasy I had read that resisters were to protect points and were not necessary for my setup. The when looking at coil options in online stores would offer coils with resistors. When I would look at the MSD's the disclaimer would say not for my engine. Thanks again I trust your opinion. Also once I do all my service work i will energize and ohm the coils installed out.

M D H and Performance-7 Sorry I don't have pictures yet while running in mud, but I have a couple of the engine. Thanks for the tip of how to upload pictures.

This is a picture of one like it that I found on the internet. Once I finish and pull it out of the garage I will get better pictures. Thanks for your help.
