New guy hoping to pick up RX7

My name is Luis. I'm a college student from Way downsouth California lol
I'm looking into picking up a junkyard Rx7. Just looking for info to see it's worth it.

Hopefully I can get some answers, thanks.

welcome to the board. :) glad to have you.

it would be best if you include the year, or at least the generation, car at which you're looking. Your first stop should be to check out the FAQ thread for that generation and then you can field whatever technical question you may have in the New Member Tech forum.

It's 90 rx7 non turbo I'm looking into buying but i don't think the car will start since its been sitting for 2 yrs. I hope the car will start since it ran before it was impounded

Good luck! I'm a new member trying to find something that will work out for me, too.

Welcome! I'm also in Southern Cal and looking for a RX (But a first generation because that's what I wanted when I was in High School LOL)

Sputnik7 05-05-13 07:10 PM

Welcome! Sounds like you are down from the south most end of Southern CA like me as well. I have had a '90 Turbo II that has been in pieces for a long time now, and it took me a good several months to find the right car. I recommend patience and not being afraid to walk away if the car just doesn't seem right. I almost ended up up with definitely the wrong car though so trust me... patience pays off!

Thanks for the welcome guys. Yea I'm still thinking about it since I'm not in a rush. I really like the 2nd gens since my brother had his. Have any of you had any luck on making a car run and drive after its been sitting for so long

Well, mine has been on jackstands for 6 years and I've finally gotten my project underway as of a couple of months ago so from where I am standing, I can't see a reason why not. Especially if all the parts are still there. A few of mine have turned up missing (which is a long long story) but as an FC owner most of the things a guy with a TII like mine can end up finding most of the stuff he needs at salvage yards. Seeing as you are looking for an NA car, you can find anything and everything at the Ecology and Pick-your-Parts of the world. Just check to see what is S5 specific and what can be taken from S4 FC's as well.

IMHO, you're best off to set your budget, then go out and find the best car you can afford. Spending a little more upfront on a car that runs means that you'll get to enjoy it that much sooner, and probably run into fewer surprises as you start to fix it up.

That said, do a little research (if you haven't already) on the cost of parts for these cars, and make sure you aren't getting in over your head. Nothing is more frustrating than having your car in the garage on jack stands for 6 months (or years in Sputnik's case) while you're saving up for or trying to locate a part. Don't ask me how I know.

When you're comparing cars and evaluating what work you'll need to put into them, consider whether or not that work will add value. For example, if I had to choose between two cars that were the same price, and one car had body damage and salvage title, and the other car needed a suspension rebuild, I'd pick the car needing the suspension work. Assume you'd put the same money into buying and fixing both of them. You can improve a car by giving it a new suspension, but no matter how shiny the paint is, you can never remove a salvage title.

Be patient with the search, eventually you will find a car you'll be proud to own.

I have been shopping on craigslist for the last month for a sec. Gen rx7 fc. Contacted about 6 people with fcs I was interested in and got beat to them all. Demand for these cars are high right now. Good luck finding one!

Datenshi 05-13-13 06:31 PM

Yeahhhh.. college students looking for RX7's :D

charlescho 05-14-13 09:46 AM

I picked up a rx7 that woiuldnt start and had cooling problems- ended up being the fule pump and radiator....wasnt too bad but I was hoping it would be something cheaper haha

Sputnik7 05-14-13 10:23 AM

Man, in the grab scheme of things, a fuel pump and a radiator is not so bad. You never had to pull the motor out so seems like a win to me.

nyckid 05-14-13 08:43 PM

keep checking craigslist. even post up a wanted ad on there site and on here and see what pops up .

jm526 05-15-13 10:37 PM

Well the car I had planned to buy on Friday,is gone. The guy sold it behind my back and he robbed the kid for extra 500 bucks lol. Engine was smoking bad and the transmission was going out lol. I'll keep searching

Last_Wolf 05-16-13 05:29 AM
