New FB owner!

Good afternoon all,

Jay here from Ottawa Ontario Canada. Just recently acquired a 1982 RX7 and really looking forward to owning this car for a very long time.

210,000kms and all original. Runs great and of course, needs a bit of love.

Thanks for having me and i look forward to chatting with many of you!

Welcome! You must have had quite the adventure getting it home in this weather!

So what are your plans before summer gets here? I see you have lots of space to work in :icon_tup:

rx7robster 02-10-17 01:18 PM

Thanks Tom!

It was driven up by the previous owner and washed immediately :) Plans so far are a full tune up and flush of fluids, brakes, bushings (if i can find the ones that are clunking) Buff out the dull paint and try to restore it. A major bath and detailing of the interior as well. Lots of work to do for sure :) I may look into installing an aftermarket radio and changing the speakers. Its pretty much all there, it just needs time and muscle.

this is my first rotary adventure so i am a little paranoid driving it before i replace everything LOL I dont really have much previous history on the engine either... these forums really help though, i am thankful for that.

Which generation do you own?

Very nice find! I'm jealous of how much room you have to work on it. Plan to rebuild the engine?

Thanks! this is a borrowed shop actually of a good friend of mine. Space in lou of work on his vehicles is a pretty sweet deal! I would love to try and rebuild it before it blows up as im sure the housings and rotors are not cheap to replace... BUT im hoping this year to just enjoy it the way it is for a summer and see how the car survives the driving throughout the warmer months.

An attempt may be made in the winter to rebuild :) there is about 1/4" of undercoating on everything so that will be the first thing to clean off of the engine before i take it apart.

Welcome to the community! Love the added ice front lip effect, sure that was a interesting drive.

Right now, Rock Auto is my best friend lol I plan to bring it up to safe driving condition.. i don't have any history really on the car, so i would probably just start there. buff the paint and shine it up ;) Luckily there is very little rust on her and should shine up really nice.

Seems to run well also, just a few items to tune it up and drive it this year and see how it goes lol

welcome to the board, Jay. :)

nonsense! unless you have reason to think something is amiss (leaking oil or water seals, low compression, etc.), leave the engine alone. maintain it, give it TLC and drive it. if this is simply a case of you wanting learn to do rebuilds, then put a few bucks away periodically until you can get your hands on a second engine, and build that one. enjoy your car. don't look for trouble, believe me, it WILL find you someday.

i wish i were in Ontario right now.

Hi Mate, Nice find looks like a very solid car. Leave it stock for a while. You can do little things to make them go well with a stock engine. First thing I would do is a set of extractors (headers) I think you call them over there. And a nice glass pack resonator and a good offset muffler (not straight through) on the rear. 2 1/2 would be a great size. It will also save you slot of weight. On the 1/4 panel you have buffed out now it is glossy seal it with a product called Meguires tech wax 2. I would imagine you can purchase it over there. We use it in our paint department at work and it is easy to use and you get a really deep finish that dirt and sunlight won't damage. Just keep putting it on every 2ND wash for the first couple of months. If you need to know anything more about first generation rx7's just send me a message. By the way I am from Queensland Australia. Cheers Mark.

Hello Mark! Thank you for your comment and advice! I will most definitely be asking some questions soon enough  I have downloaded every manual known to man and i will have to start reading LOL

Next on the list is a flush of all fluids and replacing all vacuum lines as well as the fuel pump. Im getting a bit of a misfire and i would like to make sure all bases are covered as far as any possible vacuum leaks go. Compression test will be the first thing though, i need to get my hands on a tester.

I look forward to the wonder rotary world :)
