New to the Club
Hello everyone,
I'm writing from Maryland and am new to the Club. However, I have had my 1st-gen Rx-7 for about 11 years and she is still running strong. She is the love of my life.
I figured I'd share my story on how she came to be. Back in 2000, my father had just purchased a 1993 3rd-gen twin turbo Rx-7. Black on black, with a suede interior. The car was just 'sex on wheels.' My father's only crime in life, was not letting me ever get behind the wheel. So I decided to find an Rx-7 of my own. Sure enough, I found a little old lady ready to depart with her 1985 GSL-SE. She could no longer drive a manual. Everything was dried up under the hood, but the engine was still in tact and the interior was in surprisingly good shape. There was no paint left on her, but I saw a car that could easily be renewed and given a second shot at life. I paid $2000 cash and the next thing I knew, I had an Rx-7 of my own.
I replaced all of the hoses, gaskets, seals and fuses. Installed a new CAT, clutch and brake cylinders, and replaced the stereo. Surprisingly, there was little to no rust (this was a New England non-garaged car), and I at least thanked the lady for keeping it parked on concrete and not in a pile of grass.
Finally, when it came time to repaint the car. I found it only fitting to stay true to the original color, Mazda's blue mica. Now that year, Mazda's special edition Miata was painted in that beautiful blue mica, and I saw it as a sign, that this car should see new skin in that paint.
All in all, this car was a very low investment. I have kept her garaged since, and she gets a good run as long as the weather is nice. My only regret was not documenting the restoration process. But below are some photos of her right now.
I love that all Rx-7's receive a cult following, and I love running into people who tell me they had one. There only mistake, was letting it go. I know that that is a mistake I will never make. She just eclipsed a 100,000 miles and I'm excited to see her go another 100,000.
Cheers! And thanks for the friendly welcome!
