Hi, Chad from Indiana, first RX7

As the title says, my name is Chad, and I received my first RX7 for my 42nd b-day this year. My step father owned the car for the past 20 years and is getting up in age and isn't able to keep up with the maintenance on the car. it's a 1980 1st gen, all stock, 12A 1.2L w/4bbl carb, 119k miles (2nd motor though about 6 years ago with only 2k miles on the motor), 3speed auto(factory), sunroof, factory 13inch alloys. Car is all stock. I'm slowly trying to bring it back to life. It sat under a maple tree for the last 3 years uncovered(another year with a cover on top of that). Have just recently got it road worthy again. Any suggestions on things that should be done to it to improve upon the original? I would like to keep it as stock as possible. Thanks and I hope to visit more often. I get a lot of people that stare when they see it. they're just rare around here anymore.

Chad

I live just north of Terre Haute. Getting ready to head down towards Evansville today. going to Holiday World tomorrow. Down there till saturday. car is original other than it had a new rebuilt motor in it 6 years ago. paint job is 20 years old now, but still in decent shape. Some slight rust starting in a couple places. Will probably deal with that come next winter. Debating on whether to do away with the rats nest and strip the carb or not. Also thinking of converting it to a manual transmission. Found a guy that works at a local Oriley's auto parts that used to be into RX7's, but he's since sold them but told me he had a bunch of used parts laying around his garage still. a couple motor's, trany's, and misc other things. Gonna get with him to see what he has. Am looking at maybe getting the racing beat exhaust kit and holly carb/intake kit for it. Any thoughts on that combination? I'd like to pick the power up a bit on it, but keep it mostly stock. Have it be somewhat of a 'sleeper' car. Anyway, gotta run. Will check in when I can.

The headers are a must I havent got them yet but all I hear is good about them. Yeah I got a white 90 gtu with some surface rust on top white paint never does well over time. Mines down sue to a blown oil cooler line. And yeah I havent drove an auyo yet but man these 5 spds are fun very responsible. But I would recommend a short throw cause its like 4 inches from 3rd to 4th thats a guess but its pretty far for a sports car. And hey if he has an extra engine or two I wouldnt mind getting one if they are cheep. Maybe you will get lucky and he will have a turbo 2 setup.

I believe it's all stuff from 1st gen cars up to about 84-85ish. not talked to him since the first day he saw me drive the car there and told me about the stuff but hopefully I'll catch him soon. turbo? I couldn't be that lucky.

Ok, been kinda busy this summer, but recently managed to purchase an 83 FB model as a parts car for $350. The whole floor pan and rear suspension mounting points are totally rusted out, but the visible parts of the car are solid. My 1980 ,SA came with the stock automatic transmission, the FB had the 5speed and motor(separate from the car, original 83 motor had blown I was told.) The motor that came with the car is from an '85 FB GS model, 12A with about 180k miles when it was pulled. The old owner pulled it to put a small block chevy in it. with a hard as parts are to get for the 12A, should I hold on to it, or possibly sell it and what is it worth? It spins freely by hand, and was told it was running when it was pulled. I kinda need the money, but am at a loss as to what to do with it. don't want to leave it laying around and possibly get rusted internally. Also, what parts are interchangeable between an SA and FB models. the bodies are almost identical except for tailights that I can tell. Any suggestions/info/tips would be appreciated. Also thinking of changing the SA to the 5speed since the auto is starting to slip a bit in first gear.

Thanks in advance.

friendly tip:You should start posting Tech questions in the tech section to get better results.
A lot of Intros are just overlooked by the regulars.

Ok, I know it's been awhile, but I'd recently started taking classes to learn how to repair and repaint cars. Recently repainted my SA, non stock colors since it had been modified in the interior with some parts from an FB. here's what it looks like now.

I'm glad to see you hung on to this. And the paint looks great for someone who just started taking some classes!
