help buying 1993 rx7!
 

what sup names bryan! so I'm gonna try to simplify my whole dilemma and situation as short and simple as possible!!
- I'm in the u.s army reserves and have been since last august (bootcamp - training) and I've managed to save up to 12k (on active duty pay). Because that was my original plan so that i could come back to Vegas with enough money to buy an rx7 , a car that i've been crazy about since 5th grade.
- So i talked to my dad about it and he says i wouldn't be able to afford the insurance for the car or the parts , especially since it needs a lot of maintenance.especially since ill be only able to bank on 1 weekend a month (army reserve pay) would be like 700$. (BTW I'm 20 this is my first car, and i have USAA)
so now I'm trying to figure out what car to get now cuz that really just crushed me , it sucks cuz i have the money for the car , but i wouldn't be able to afford it afterward, whats your guys's opinion on that? ( i mean i wanna be able to do all the maintenance on my car, especially since its rotary and all)
some help would really help guys, I'm juggling between this RX7 SINGLE TURBO 1993 or possibly settling for a 2000 acura integra gsr stock.:scratch::scratch::scratch:

Yes, you would have to look at what it would cost to insure and maintain. Neither will be cheap considering it is an FD in addition to your age. The integra would likely be cheaper in both areas.

If you want a rotary, you may look at a nice FB/FC instead. Keep it simple. You don't need a beast as a beast ends up being expensive to maintain as well as upgrade. Once you are more established and a bit older (insurance will drop after you are 25), then you may look at getting a single turbo FD at that point. I would still have another car as a DD and use the FD for a weekend toy.

That is just my thoughts. Although you want the FD, you also don't want it to make you broke to where you work only to keep the car on the road and have no money for anything else.

ahhh man i was hoping this wouldn't be the case. but thanks man. I'm taking your advice cuz you obviously know what your talking about . hopefully i run into a an fc on a lot or from someone when i get back to vegas ! thanks!

I've been in the same boat you are for a while. I just graduated and I know that I have a good income starting up shortly, so now I am gearing up for my purchase. I waited and I'm very happy that I did. Buying the FD in your current situation would probably keep you from enjoying the car to the fullest.

You may consider an MX-5 if you want the fun that comes with an FR layout. Its a cheap car, reliable, parts are relatively inexpensive and its very easy to work on. I don't remember insurance being overwhelming either. I had a 94 and it was one of my favorites.

That sounds like a good plan. The FC will be much less expensive for the car and insurance. Even if you can "afford" the FD, you don't want it draining all your cash especially since it sounds like your income may not be that stable. Congrats on saving up the cash. I wouldn't spend it all on a car. If you do, and it breaks down, you'll be mad that you spent everything and have something that doesn't work and no money left to fix it. I would spent like 3k-4k on an FB/FC and save the rest.

Like I said, the FD would be a good fun/second car. It wouldn't be good for a DD for many reasons (mpg, maintaining it, etc.).

gsl-se addict is right. even if you want to invest what you have into a car, its not wise to blow it all on one car especially if you want to mode. You can build a beastly fc for 7-8k and have money left over for yourself. All about the compromise my brother
