Hello from Philadelphia

Hello everyone,
My name is Nate and I'm new to the forum. I've previously owned a 1988 Mazda Rx7 and a 2004 Mazda Rx8. In the next few months I plan on purchasing the 1st gen Rx7. I plan on using the vehicle for autocross and light spirited driving. Does anyone recommend a specific year?

I prefer the 1983 model myself but weight rules may make it a moot point. I don't race though, so this is an opinion only. I don't know for sure if any 1stgen racers look this board over, so I'll PM one to drop in. ;)

Welcome aboard, Nate! Glad you finally came to your senses and want a 1stgen!

Mario asked me to chime in here. While I race first gens I don't autocross. I run in SCCA EP class.

For racing in general I like the 84-85. They have the larger front and rear wheel bearings. Find a GSL model as it will have the limited slip diff. Another plus is the 84-85 uses the larger clutch that the second gen uses. The SE model has the largest brakes, and also comes with the larger 13b motor.
I do believe the 81-83 ķa a little lighter. Regardless choose a GSL model. You can always strip out the heavy stuff like power windows.

That's some great points there on the axles and brakes. Thanks for dropping in, I knew he'd have some good stuff to share!
