Hello from Japan

Wanted to say hello, I'm living in Japan and am going to purchase an FD soon I just wanted to know what the differences were on some of the 3rd gen one such as touring or type r, type rb, rb Bathurst, type s, RS etc.

They're all pretty much the same. You really only need to be worried about the rs, rz and spirit r. They're all 1997+ and are usually pretty expensive. Just pick one that isn't a dumpster fire and you'll be alright. Just look to make sure it has two oil coolers and 3 pedals.

Keep in mind the older Gen 3's are now able to be registered as classic/antique in a lot of states, if you are military could probably bring an older one back with you ;)

I've been there 3 times and always drooled over the Gen 3's. Just got back from there in January and it took everything I had to not go through the export process as I'm about to leave the active forces. If you come across some good deals keep us in mind! :icon_tup:

will do. But lately the prices of fd's have been going up I use to see some for 7k-10 but now they are looking even more and thinking about going through an auction but there is such a risk in buying a car from one especially a rotary engine

Auctions are scary for any car especially if you don't get to poke around. But you're right these rotors are so temperamental in comparison. I'm still thinking of those 92 imports from Japan as they are not only neater by being RHD, but cheaper than the ones here by 10k+ unless it's the Spirit of course.

Only really familiar with Series 8s, but I imported one from Japan recently. Definitely shooting up in price there (not nearly as hard as R34 GTRs luckily).

Type RBs get a nice discount compared to the others and are a good option if you plan to treat it as a project car and get rid of half of the stock bits anyway
Type R adds a lot of features - more power, dual oil coolers, etc - and is a good place to target from the start
Type R Bathurst are a waste in my opinion. They cost even more the Type RSs with barely any extra features to make it worth it (adjustable suspension which you'll probably upgrade anyway, some interior bits and pieces) and don't even have the RS features
Type RS get a 4.3 diff and bigger rotors and only cost a little bit more than Type Rs - though for some reason, seem rarer than the Type R Bathurst

Type RZ and Spirit R have huge premiums that I'd only target if you really want one and plan to keep it mostly stock. You get a lot of special limited edition stuff like wheels, seats, passenger foot rest, interior trim bits, etc.
