Hello. First Rx-7. 1987 Base Coupe.

Hi, so I've typically been a Subaru guy, but a couple years ago I picked up a cheap RX8 Shinka. Recently just swapped out the engine and fell in love with the noise it makes.

Anyway, been looking out for a project Rx-7, and one popped up for $1200 locally. Just got her towed yesterday. She's scruffy but seems pretty complete. Looking forward to getting her going again.

Details:
  • Car fox says 258,000 miles, LOLOLOL, 100,000 more than the odo,
  • No idea about the engine, other than it turns over but won't start,
  • Exterior is pretty straight overall aside from dings on both front quarters,
  • Missing door protectors
  • Front lower bumper is pretty messed up,
  • Riding on z wheels, but I have a set of clean stock FC wheels, and a rough set of black rattle-canned vert BBS wheels,
  • Hood appears to be made of lead and will be the first thing off the car,
  • Interior is ragged and needs a lot of love,
  • A good part of it is loose and tossed in the back, hopefully including door sill trims, original radio etc.

Still filthy. Needs some TLC.

Very nice find for the price. That interior is in better shape than many cars this old (though I can't speak on how it might smell )
Looks like the body is in good shape too! Good Luck!

Thanks, managed to find some time to vacuum out some of the pine needles, dirt, bugs etc., from pretty much everywhere and also move all the trim to a pile in the garage. Looks like the car run last maybe in 2020, but wasn't serious in use past 2016 or so, judging by old registration forms etc. Certainly a North Texas car. Good place for a rotary, it gets cold in Abilene!
The smell is not bad. No damp, just dusty and dirty.
Next job will be compression testing the engine and seeing just what we're dealing with. Battery is on the charger now.
Then cleaning up the interior and sourcing replacements for the broken surrounds, broken vents, broken light switch knobs, cracked shift knob, and maybe sourcing an original radio.
Will start a build thread and move there shortly.

Welcome to the forum!! What ann excellent find!! The seats are from a TII and overall the car appears very restorable! In the 2nd gen section we can go over how to test the fuel pump and injectors as those are commonly fail after the car has been sitting. Great car to restore and enjoy!

Thanks - closing this thread and moving over to my build thread in the FC section.

No need to close it. However, looking forward to a build thread on the car!
