Hello all,
My name is Felipe I live in Miami, FL and I currently drive this:

2000 Honda Prelude Type SH
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...G_3211copy.jpg
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...G_3334copy.jpg
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...G_3153copy.jpg
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...G_3305copy.jpg

Either way, I'm new here and I want to just say greetings all and introduce myself as I am right now looking to buy a 93' RX-7 and I have to learn basically from the bottom up EVERYTHING about this car. It took me the full year of owning my Prelude to even understand it and get it to the point where I can say I'm proud....
And I would love to get to know this rotary engine and the amazing looking car that I might be purchasing. I literally need to learn EVERYTHING...
so I'm looking forward to the experience!!
Enjoy the pics plz comment on them any feedback is welcome!!

Nice clean prelude hopefully you get the FD though :D Welcome to the forum.

GIXXER-PITBULL 02-05-09 12:50 AM

Welcome to the site dog. The FD is nice. Good luck on getting it. I know how I was about a month ago when I was going through the process of buying mine. I was praying every night that nothing went wrong. I like your avatar. I'm also a Gears player.

sweet. hey guys i have a question...

everyone bashes rx7's for being unreliable... what are the common issues that these cars have or what are the unreliable factors of it!?

coredata 02-05-09 10:01 PM

while i am no authority:

a lot of forced induction RX's pop because people run them too lean. simply put, a lot of people install an intake and replace the exhaust as their first mods -- this is a bigass 'nono' as it will cause the engine to run too lean, or overboost without a boost controller. i have been told that by simply installing an intake and a full hi-flow exhaust (even with a cat still on) the stock injectors can run at up to 95+% -- im not a mechanic, but this seems like 'pushing the envelope' to me. imho, this habit of 'quick mods' and 'engine pop' has really given the FD a bad name.

also, the stock twin sequential turbo setup is stupidly complex -- the silicone hoses go with age and heat, and the mess of hoses are known as the 'rats nest'. google image search 'rx7 rats nest', you'll get the idea.

heat is the main problem, from what little i know.

the engine runs really hot, and overheating can quickly kill your engine -- one of the first things to do (if it hasnt already been done) is to delete the pre-catalytic converter by installing a downpipe (I have one from rx7.com). the FD has a precat and a main cat -- the precat can be replaced with a DP, and the main cat replaced with a hi-flow cat and (hopefully) still pass emissions testing -- while greatly reducing the amount of heat in the engine bay.

finally (re: cooling) the AST. the FD has an 'air separation tank' which helps extract air from the coolant, reducing 'hot spots', since the car runs so hot. the stock AST is "plastic" (but i have also been told its a wood pulp / epoxy blend) that over time absorbs coolant. if the AST is not BLACK (like REALLY BLACK) or has ANY green coloration to it, its time to change. probably 99% of the people on this forum will recommend an aluminum AST, but I have been jinxed by them (long story, not worth posting). i have an aluminum AST that i never used for sale, if your interested ;)

this isnt a huge one, but its been a concern of mine: if the OMP dies (oil metering pump) - your engine will die. the OMP injects oil into the engine to lubricate and cool the moving components inside the 13b. to avoid this, you can premix using (for example) a synthetic 2 stroke oil, i use idemitsu rotary race fuel lube.

reliability mods i would do, in no particular order:
downpipe (i said no order, but do this or the AST first)
AST replacement (NEW oem or aftermarket)
boost gauge (to check vacuum and boost -- you do NOT want to overboost without controlling fuel)
aftermarket radiator
high performance fuel pump, and fuel pump wiring / grounding mod/fix
boost controller
computer
. . .
. . .
. . .
<three pages later>
i guess thats about it. good luck with your FD if you buy it! They are expensive, but seriously, what kind of 'grown up toy' that is totally awesome isnt? ;)

g'luck!

FyVe 02-05-09 10:06 PM

thanks dude.. that makes me feel great because EVERYTHING u listed is taken care of in the car ima buy.
its going to be a single turbo, with 2 extra coolers on the front (grille, lower outer sides) i guess they are both oil coolers? i dunno,.. that AST im sure has been upgraded but i need to know where it is...
the cat problem is gone the pipe is STRAIGHT through open all the way...
has a boost gauge
has a apexi neo also...

i mean... everythings taken care of... i hope? ima recheck tho

coredata 02-05-09 10:18 PM

the ast in its stock location is bolted onto the oem intercooler, and would be located where this aftermarket one is in this pic:

http://www.rx7.voodoobox.net/infofaq...3g/coolant.jpg

(that engine bay isnt 100% stock, so it might be elsewhere, but thats almost exactly in the stock location)

the R-1 RX7's had two oil coolers -- you might ask if its an R1 -- they also came with a more 'trackable', but rougher suspension.

no worries man -- glad to provide some input!

coredata 02-05-09 10:20 PM

oh, also sent you a PM with some other thoughts, but really no matter what, have the compression of the engine tested -- you should get six numbers (and probably a nice graph)

the first three, and last three numbers should ideally be 'similar' -- you do NOT want two high and one low, or two low and one high -- likewise, you dont want the first three numbers and last three to vary too much (search for compression test posts -- theres tons of info)

again -- g'luck!

nice ride, freaking clean ass Prelude! i remember having a SH myself till someoone smashed my passenger side while i was sleeping in..... :/ hit and run...... Karma will bite back! >:|

but welcome and definitley look into that FD, that is pure SEX! lolz~

FyVe 02-06-09 10:34 PM

yea its confirmed... i'm getting the FD on monday unless i have a sickening feeling like i did tonight on monday.
this is a post i posted on my prelude forum (preludepower.com)

well guys... its confirmed. I'm getting the car on monday.
Pretty much a done deal...

on another note...
i had a VERY sad ride home. I cannot believe what I felt today...when I got out of the gym i saw my car under the white lights in the parking lot and realized this may be our last weekend together... i felt SICK inside. I cannot believe how emotionally attached i am to my lude... despite her issues here and there... damnit. i have some work on the lude this weekend before i sell her... damn.. i really felt sick inside.

on another note:
I've named my future RX7!! It's name is going to be Outlaw Star after my favorite anime... and because it fits the part.
I drove it today and almost crashed it on the test drive because some asshole cut me off NASTY and i couldnt find the brakes cuz the pedals are WAY close together compared to the lude. the car is nasty... i mean NASTY... at like 4rpm easy driving speeding is like a joke... i got a lot of respect after driving it a short distance and i got some fear too. definitely a sick machine... i hope its worth it. goddamnit... my poor lude... my poor baby.. i wish she was more mechanically fit

Black-Gorrilla 02-07-09 10:23 AM

You spent way too much time and money on your prelude... maybe more than Honda did.
Guys, this car (his prelude) was taken more care of than many other cars in the world. The paint on all the parts mach almost 100%. The car has the NICEST set of projectors on a non factory set-up. It has the crispy clean cutoff that you dont get in alot of cars (makes my Audi A6 headlights look like poo). The interior of that car is well taken care of as well.
BUT.... That RX7 (pics are shitty fone pics) is so sick. Nice wheels, Clean, and built right (current owner and previous owner really know what they are doing when it comes to cars...) Everything that might be an issue was more than likely taken care of. That RX7 only really needs new headlights (projectors... non flip up)

nice

Really clean, i like

FyVe 02-07-09 07:52 PM

guys here's another question... when i start the car up it does this 3 times EVERY TIME,
it starts up on the 1st or 2nd click (which is better than my lude!) and revs up, then down a little, up, down, up and down, then it stays up around 1k rpm or wherever the normal idle is...
my mechanic said its normal it does that every single time and so far hes right, after that the idle is gorgeous. whats up with that?

naplesturbo 02-07-09 10:42 PM

I was told that is the cold start system. Mine does it too.

FyVe 02-09-09 10:50 PM
