First Time FD/Rotary Owner

Hey all -

The FD Rx7 has always been one of my dream cars to own and this one just happened to fall in my lap. I've been seeing this car in a garage 10 minutes down the street from my house over the last decade. A couple of months ago, I decided to stop by the owners house and see what the deal was with the car. After some back and forth, he agreed to sell me the car and I picked it up last week. It is a 1994 Rx7 touring in Chaste White with the black and tan interior and manual transmission. The car hasn't ran in 5 years, but I plan to get it back on the road again soon.

After a deep cleaning to remove 5 years worth of dust, the car looks halfway decent; no major damage, just some door dings here and there. I did a bit of cleaning on the interior as well and was very pleased to find that the door panels, dash vents, and everything else was in great shape yet. The only pieces on the interior that were broken were the defrost vents which I will be replacing.

This past weekend I did some digging into the car and found that the fuel was beyond bad, the pump doesn't work, and the gas tank needed to be cleaned out. I removed the fuel tank and will be working on that this week. I've got new spark plugs, fuel filter, and a fuel pump on the way so I'm hoping to attempt to start the car this weekend. I have been into DSM's and a few other platforms for the last 14 years so wrenching on cars and dealing with mechanical issues isn't very new to me; just a new platform to learn.

I can't wait to learn more and work on getting the car back on the road!

Wow, welcome and congrats on that purchase. What a find. I love the stories of seeing a car, approaching an owner and working out a deal. Chaste white 94 is a special combo in my opinion. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Fortunately, I was able to get the car started this weekend! New fuel pump, filter, spark plugs, and an oil change and it fired right up! Next up is fixing the brakes as there’s almost no pedal pressure along with the gauge cluster (tach and odometer).

Welcome to the forum!! That's a beautiful FD and great job getting it running! Did the previous owner full you in on any of the car's history?

Thank you! I do have a folder of records from the previous owner, but I know the car sat for quite a while under the previous owner's time owning the car. I do know at some point the engine was refreshed, but they weren't able to find the receipt from that. Everything on the engine itself appears to be pretty clean so I am inclined to believe that it was gone through at some point. I am very happy to have gotten the car running, but there are a few other things needing to be addressed.

- The car has zero brake pedal pressure. I started bleeding the lines and I got a lot of air and nasty looking brake fluid out of all of the lines, but it appears that there is still a lot of air in the fronts. When pumping the pedal, very little fluid wants to come out and we can physically hear air in the abs module whenever pumping the pedal. The rears move a lot of fluid and provide resistance when pumping the pedal. I'm going to pick up a vacuum bleeder today and see if I can get the fronts to bleed. I'm thinking the master cylinder could have an internal leak, but the rears behave much differently than the fronts when bleeding them.

- After getting the car running, I discovered a fuel leak at the engine. I'm going to take the UIM and other pieces off so that I can prime the system and identify where the leak is coming from. I'm assuming it is going to be either the pulse damper or injector seals that are likely hard as a rock.

- The tach and odometer don't work. I was able to see the odometer display once since messing with the car, but it doesn't consistently work. I am figuring there could be leaking capacitors on the cluster circuitry causing these issues, but I'll dig into this once I get the other two things figured out first.
