Finally joined the RX7 & rotary family; meet Julie!

Hey RX7 Club,

The FD was my childhood dream car and I finally have been able to get my hands on one. I just wanted to introduce myself and Julie to the RX7 family. I decided to go with one straight from the motherland, RHD 1992 Efini RX7 TYPE R. I wanted to start with a stock one but I found this girl with a Single turbo and many other good upgrades with only 44k KMs = ~27k Miles so I couldn't resist.I do have good vehicle knowledge but this is my first RX7, my first Rotary, and my first Turbo vehicle so I definitely have a lot to learn, which is why I'm here hoping to find some honest help from fellow rotary heads. I already have a lot of questions, but I do a lot of research on my own so I will be surfing the forums and hope to not have to make new annoying noob threads lol. Anyways glad to be here and hope to meet you guys on the forums!

Thanks brotha! Yea the mileage was what sold it for me, I was originally looking for a stock one. That is very true, it came With a chipped ecu so I'm looking for a new one already, plus I'm here in the colorado springs over a mile high in altitude so I have to get on that asap! See you around the forum brotha!

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the forum!

Car looks fantastic and you have plenty of $$$ in those gauges

As others have mentioned and I cannot stress enough; please resist the urge to drive it until you get a tune! There have been several instances of guys trashing perfect running motors here in Canada due to the lower quality gasoline and the altitude

Anyway you will find lots of support and information here to help you enjoy your baby for many years to come!

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I’m not sure how much is dedication and how much is my OCD/insanity…but they all get me to the same end result on the build!

As for a computer, best advice I can give is to find a good rotary tuner/engine builder to do your tune, then ask them which ECU they prefer. May as well get the computer that the person doing the tuning knows and likes.

What ECU is currently in your car? With a single turbo setup from Japan I would usually expect to find a Power FC tucked in here

Haha man well that Must be the good type of OCD, and yea this has got to be one of the best and most detailed builds I have seen, I'm still in awe. Congratulations man!

That's really good advice, I didn't think of that, I'll get the tuners recommendation.

They actually put a chipped one, I was gonna see if it's reprogrammable but just in case I'm already getting ready to get another one. I've seen plenty of those Power FC computers being sold around, how are they? Have you ever messed with one of those?

This is the one that's in there, can really see anything that suggests if it's reprogrammable.

It may just be easier to get a power FC than figuring out a way to reprogram that thing (plus you can get a commander for the FC which looks sweet imo). Unless that can somehow be reflashed.

Yea and I know a lot of places won't even want to reflash a ecu so that's what I'm preparing for, and the Power FC commander does look pretty sweet dude haha. A buddy of mine told me the Power FC is basic and there are a lot better computers out there, but I'm not gonna track my baby so I don't think I need something too fancy, I'm going to start looking into what exactly are the differences.

Yeah I would replace that unit. I have a Power FC in my car because that's what was installed when it arrived from Japan. The legend that built my engine tunes both Power FC and MicroTech units so I decided to just keep my Power FC. I am sure there are threads on here discussing the benefits of each system, but personally I would run whatever your tuner recommends.

Nice, yea I was hoping mine would've came with a Power FC but oh well I'll be getting in touch with a local tuner and see what he recommends for me. I don't want to get an ecu that no one wants to mess with, so thank you very much for your help brotha!

Thanks brotha, I appreciate it! It definitely is, my friends think I'm insane for spending so much on a 1992 but they don't know their head from their *** when it comes to these JDM icons haha. Enjoy your FD, I will too brotha!!

The *smooth plastic interior* that you have is getting hard to find .
I advice you to be careful not breaking anything , or you'll spend a awhile looking for the exact replacement, specially the gauge hood..

As opposed to others , I think you should drive it,unless you know for certain there is an engine/tune/soul problem.

Clean the fuel tank , fluids, "inspection" and I would just go.

Upgrades or Downgrades that Add/remove air or fuel will definitely cause you problem.

Just be worry that its an "unknown engine".
It might be her original heart if you look at the top of the front iron you'll see a serial number that is suppose to match your VIN, if he does , congrats.
Doesn't mean she hasn't been open.

She looks very well kept at 40ish K ,
The person who had it, took care of it by the pictures.
The gentleman probably got his lady tune at KnightSport.
If I was Japanese I would of done the same or close anyways.

Your front markers have been changed to early models.

And here are some part # that might interest u

oCowl grill cap E01650796
oHood insulator FD0168601C
oHood insulator fastener (13) GA2A56694

Thanks for the warm welcome brotha! It does look like she was taken care of, the 40k KM is one of the main reasons I went with her. Man thanks for taking your time to write this up for me, this information is gold brotha, you're awesome!!! I was gonna be careful as it is but now that you say it I am going to be extra careful with the Interior!

Definitely going to do Inspection/Tune up. That's very true about the engine, I didn't know that about the engine matching the VIN so I'll look for that.I haven't done any modifications myself yet, but I've only driven her twice because we have had some more snow than expected, I did notice going up to 6k on 3rd she bogged pretty bad, so I am sure I need to do a new tune. Im planning on going with a Adaptronic ECU, I've heard really good things about it and after researching it, its a pretty advanced ECU but with a simple User Interface so it is great for beginners as my self.

Again thank you for taking your time and posting this information for me, very helpful and I'm loving the RX7 community so far, I'll see you around the forum brotha!

Pretty sure this is one of the cars I was browsing through earlier in the year.... glad it turned out to be such a beaut for you! The mods already in place look very solid, too, so a great way to get started off.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. It might be, I got it from Top Rank Importers also known as International Vehicle Importers, they advertise a lot so it might be the one.

I told myself that I would start with a stock FD because I didn't want to deal with bad mods, custom crap and tampered wiring etc... but yea the mods were too nice and appealing plus the low mileage so I caved lol and yea believe me getting in there I am seeing an electrical wiring mess oh well lesson of life, we are hard headed by nature and easily seduced haha.
