Finally got a RX7...unexpectedly

Hey everyone,

I actually joined the forum a long time ago back when I was looking for a car. I ended up settling with a Chrysler Conquest TSI (Mitsubishi Starion) and I really did love it, but, I sold it and fixed up my Dodge Ram SS/T.

Well...with gas getting upwards of $4.00 a gallon, the truck was getting a little expensive to drive, but, I've put way too much work into it, so, I kept that.

But, I also had a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9L Limited (one fast vehicle, that thing hauled some serious ass), but, it was my sacrificial vehicle, so, up for sale that went.

Along came a guy with a 1988 RX7 convertible. Black with grey interior, all original minus the slightly modded exhaust...just filthy inside, but otherwise a nice looking/running car. Drove it around, fell in love...

so...went through with the trade...lol

It really is a nice car, runs excellent, handles like its on rail, all with 145k on the clock. The a/c doesn't work nor does the CD/Cass, but, everything else operates flawlessly and I'm actually in the process of cleaning her up now.

But...just figured I'd reintroduce myself with my new car. I'll post some pictures later.

All I plan on doing is going over it and making sure everything is working flawlessly and putting a set of wheels, TII hood, (hopefully) a mazdaspeed rear decklid spoiler, and just driving it around.

I hear these don't get great gas mileage, but, my truck gets 10mpg, 12 highway, so, if I got 18mpg I'd be tickled...lol

So...there you go, some nightime pictures in a little bit :p

Looking forward to being an active part of the site...lol

Here's the only pic of her thus far. Still need to wash it, clay bar it, and wax it, and get rid of the pine tree air freshener...lol

That wing is the stock duckbill wing. I have one and was gonna sell it, but I'm to lazy to dig it out.

Very nice!!!

Here's some more picture of her...all cleaned up now :)

Just need that duckbill spoiler, a t2 hood, and some wheels...though the stock BBS wheels aren't to bad, just not dished enough. :p

But, here's some more pictures.

We'll see how much registering the car puts me back...but, next friday, I may be getting that from you.

Very nice, have fun in it. All us 7 owners do :D

strang3majik 04-18-11 11:07 PM

Well, its registered now and I took it on its first day of driving around. Went through $20 worth of gas in 70 miles (about 14.7 mpg)...then again, I was putting it through its paces today...lol

But, its is a fun car and handles very very well, and, from 110 down to 40, it stops very quickly too...haha Have to get used to the power curve though...I'm used to low end torque monsters, different having everything up top, but, very fun :p

Also, after looking under the hood, I can tell nothing has ever been touched, which is nice. It even still has the pollution pump on it (which may be going).

But, all in all, I'm happy with it. Just going to spruce up the image a little and just drive it. I'm happy with the power it has for now. Also, the aftermarket exhaust it has sounds great. Very deep sound.

And...do these cars have traction control or something? Say one were to rev it up and dump the clutch and it beep and then take off, no tires spinning...is that normal? It also beeps as a shift indicator too, which is kinda cool for 1988.

Be careful on dumping it. Don't "pop" it. You will more then likely over time bust/snap the half-shafts.

haha...not a problem. I'm not a big clutch dumper anyhow....just one of those seeing what she can do type of things...lol

And, I did notice how cute the axles were...I guess that is a potential weak link...haha

Also, figured I'd add, all the burnout marks in the pictures are from the Jeep I traded for this car...lol

Nice vert! :D

evot23 04-19-11 06:19 AM

nice looking 7.

strang3majik 04-20-11 12:05 AM

Thanks guys! The more I drive it, the more I like it...haha.

Its funny because my truck handles very well...I've even outhandled a Mustang GT in the twisties with it, and, I've learned to toss that 4500lb mass of steel around like its car...

well...getting in this car, I feel like I'm driving an overpowered go-kart, and its cool as hell...lol Can whip it around like its nothing...very fun to drive. :p

This makes me want to find a local auto-X event and try it out...haha.
