Finally...

Hows it going all?

Well I finally got my rx7. :D
I am 20 now, and have loved rx7's since I was about 15.
I recently picked up an 87' base for $500, it runs great and I love everything about it.
I have been lurking these forums for quite some time now, but I figured I'd wait until I actually got an rx7 to make an account. :P
Here are a few pics:

Only problem with it is I walked out to find this today:

It's brake fluid :( I looked around for a while to find the source of the leak, and I found it here:

It is leaking from the bottom of the master cylinder/ brake booster (where they bolt together), any advice?
Also when I start my car after a while steam comes from the exhaust when it is at idle(not thick smoke a very light steam). I have read some about coolant seal failure but my coolant level hasn't dropped. It looks like water and smells like exhaust.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and I hope to be a productive member of this community.

Hey that looks like a nice 7 for $500. Congrats and welcome to the Club!

The brake master might have a blown seal or the reservoir o-ring might be bad, master cylinders are easy to swap out and cheap to replace, look on e-bay for a new one. The fluid is highly corrosive so I would wash everything down with water really good or you'll be missing paint soon. The tech section is filled with tons of info on every repair you could imagine so you might wanna check out that section for help with your repairs.

But the important part is that you finally got your rx7, I remember the feeling well. Excellent choice and good luck with everything.

edit - also the steam from the exhaust after start up doesn't sound bad, does it go away once the car is warmed up? Thick white smoke that smells sweet is coolant burning, blue smoke is oil burning. Sounds like you might just have moisture in the exhaust system, most cars steam a bit when they are warming up, even brand new ones.

Thanks for the help and warm welcomes everyone.
I am from bay city as well challer I think I have seen you driving around quite a bit :P

to nj, the steam isn't thick and it doesn't smell sweet, I am just a bit paranoid, I think lol. the engine only has 65k on it so I think it has a good bit of life in it.

thanks again guys

i paid $500 for my '81,wouldn't change a thing though haha. But you got a clean looking car for that price and it shouln't be too hard of a fix for you.I can't wait to get my 7 on the road, but there's no point yet being so close to winter.i'm going to wait it out and buy some parts over the off season to keep my sanity.

blacktrash Oct 6, 2008 10:29 AM

wipe your headlights off with brake fluid.

FixableUnknown Oct 7, 2008 08:39 PM

Congrats on the new car

Thanks for the kind words everyone :)
I have decided to just buy a new master cylinder.
I took the old one off and the seals are shot.

EDIT: Why would I put brake fluid on my headlights? just curious.

Haha nice, I remember when I first purchased my first car when I was 18. and it was a Honda Prelude SI. Loved that car to death, all the work you put into your first car, will def make you love your car more. Good luck on your future projects!

$500? I'm stunned. Can't find anything like that in Fort Worth/Dallas. Yet!
